Volunteer Position – DC Squared Treasurer, Board of Directors

Location:
Washington, DC (Ward 5 focus)

Estimated Commitment: 4–8 hours per month

DC Squared (DC²) is a community development organization working to strengthen commercial corridors and economic opportunities across Northeast DC. In addition to operating the Rhode Island Avenue NE and Upper Bladensburg Road NE Main Street programs, DC² leads broader initiatives such as placemaking and public art, small business technical assistance, clean teams, food access programming, real estate activation, community events, and workforce pathways.

We are seeking a mission-driven, detail-oriented Treasurer to join our Board of Directors and help lead financial stewardship across this diverse and growing portfolio of programs.

About the Role

The Treasurer serves as the chief financial steward of the organization. This role is essential to ensuring that DC² maintains sound financial practices, meets all grant and regulatory requirements, and remains positioned for sustainable growth.

The Treasurer works closely with the Executive Director, external accountants, auditors, and fellow board members to provide clear oversight, transparency, and governance.

This position offers the opportunity to support community-based economic development, strengthen local businesses, and contribute to vibrant, equitable neighborhoods throughout Ward 5.

Key Responsibilities
  • Review monthly financial statements, bank reconciliations, and program-level P&L reports.
  • Maintain and strengthen internal controls and financial policies.
  • Provide financial updates at board meetings and identify emerging risks.
Budgeting & Strategic Planning
  • Lead the organization’s annual budgeting process with the Executive Director.
  • Review budget-to-actual performance and cash flow throughout the fiscal year.
  • Support financial forecasting that aligns with programmatic and organizational goals.
  • DC² administers multiple public grants and contracts (DHCD, DSLBD, DMPED, and others). The Treasurer will:
  • Ensure financial compliance across all grants and restricted funding.
  • Review all grant-related financial submissions before they are sent to agencies.
  • Oversee proper tracking and coding in Quick Books and supplemental systems.
  • Oversee the performance of external bookkeepers, accountants, and auditors.
  • Review and approve scopes of work, billing, invoices, and deliverables.
  • Ensure accurate, itemized billing and adherence to organization policies.
Audit & Annual Filings
  • Lead the biennial audit preparation and review process.
  • Ensure timely filing of the annual Form 990 and all DC regulatory obligations.
  • Present audit findings and recommendations to the Board.
Systems Oversight
  • Maintain oversight of Quick Books Online and any financial technology systems.
  • Ensure DC² maintains all administrative access, backups, and documentation.
  • Approve updates to the chart of accounts and any system migrations.
Leadership & Governance
  • Serve as Chair of the Finance Committee.
  • Work collaboratively with the Executive Director to uphold transparency and accountability.
  • Support financial capacity-building across the organization.
Qualifications
  • Ideal candidates will have:
  • Experience in accounting, finance, auditing, nonprofit financial management, or public administration
  • Understanding of nonprofit financial reports and grant-funded budgets
  • Familiarity with or willingness to learn Quick Books Online
  • Experience with government grants is a plus
  • Strong organizational and analytical skills
  • A commitment to DC²’s mission of community-centered economic development

DC² strongly encourages candidates who reflect the diversity of the communities we serve to apply.

What You Gain
  • A meaningful leadership role supporting equitable economic development
  • Experience shaping financial systems in a dynamic community development organization
  • Opportunity to guide investments into local businesses, workforce programs, and corridor revitalization
  • A collaborative, mission-driven board environment

This is a volunteer position with significant community impact.
