Position Summary

The Chief of Staff serves as the CEO’s strategic partner and force multiplier, driving alignment across strategy, leadership, and operations. The role translates executive decisions into organizational direction, ensures cross‑team coherence, and reinforces accountability across the enterprise. The COS leads executive coordination, governance, and organization‑wide initiatives to maintain focus, momentum, and measurable progress toward organizational goals.

Serving as a central integrator across the Executive Team, the Chief of Staff strengthens strategic coherence, enables effective leadership communication, and ensures that priorities—including shifts and de‑prioritization—are understood and operationalized consistently. The Chief of Staff also acts as a stabilizing leadership presence during periods of complexity or pressure, maintaining focus, clarity, and momentum in alignment with the CEO’s direction.

This role includes oversight of governance, board management, executive coordination, and cross‑organizational initiatives, ensuring that leadership decisions translate into measurable progress toward the organization’s mission and goals.

Salary Range for this position is $180,000 to $200,000 annually.

Strategic Leadership and Collaboration
  • Serve as strategic advisor and partner to the CEO, ensuring alignment between executive priorities and organizational execution.
  • Translate CEO and Executive Team decisions into clear operational direction, defining what shifts, stops, or continues.
  • Manage communication flow and follow‑through across the Executive Team, including agenda design, materials, and outcomes for executive meetings and retreats.
  • Support Executive Team leaders in communicating priorities and operationalizing decisions with their teams.
  • Reinforce ownership, decision rights, and accountability across leadership levels.
Board Governance and Relations
  • Serve as primary liaison to the Board of Directors, overseeing all aspects of governance, including onboarding, meeting planning, materials, minutes, schedules, and follow‑up actions.
  • Maintain governance documents (bylaws, charters, manuals) and ensure compliance with governance standards.
  • Partner with the CEO and COO on governance, legal, and regulatory compliance.
Strategic and Administrative Leadership
  • Lead organizational goal‑setting and monitor progress on strategic and operational initiatives.
  • Advise the CEO on organizational effectiveness, resource allocation, and priority setting.
  • Partner with the COO to implement policies and procedures that support operational excellence and mission alignment.
Communication and Stakeholder Engagement
  • Serve as primary translator of executive decisions, ensuring consistent and clear communication on follow‑through across leadership levels and representing the CEO when needed.
  • Manages Executive Office to the CEO and President, which includes Executive Administration and External Affairs.
  • Partner with Human Resources, Inclusion, and Belonging to ensure the organization’s focus on Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion remains strong and central.
  • Provides support to local and state Leagues as required; serves as arbiter or delegates when needed.
Requirements Education / Certifications
  • Bachelor’s degree in business administration, public administration or a related field.
  • CAE certification is a plus.
  • Board Source Governance Certificate or equivalent governance credential is highly desirable.
Knowledge, Skills & Experience
  • 15+ years of nonprofit, corporate, or association leadership experience.
  • Deep understanding of organizational structures, strategic planning, board governance, and project management.
  • Strong knowledge of governance, regulatory standards, and compliance.
  • Exceptional communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to lead and manage multiple complex initiatives across teams.
  • Strong analytical, problem‑solving, and prioritization skills.
  • Experience working with Boards of Directors.
  • Proven discretion and ability to handle sensitive information.
