Job Purpose

The Senior Manager of Outreach and Membership leads AFJ/AFJ Action Campaign initiatives, under guidance of the Director of Outreach and Membership, to deepen and expand engagement of progressive organizations, national and state advocates, AFJ members, and legal communities to elevate the importance of the courts and defending democracy, including civil society. Working with staff across AFJ departments, the Senior Manager of Outreach and Membership works to expand AFJ’s presence in the judicial nominations, democracy, and broader progressive movements by coordinating and executing events, expanding our grasstops outreach, engaging organizations to oppose egregious judicial candidates and support movement lawyers, supporting AFJ’s membership program, and more.

Duties

and Responsibilities
  • Lead outreach initiatives with national and state progressive groups, AFJ member organizations, grasstop connections, and attorneys and legal elites to engage on the courts and participate in AFJ’s network, with an emphasis on AFJ’s member and partner groups;
  • Work with Director of Outreach and Membership and Vice President of Strategy to develop priorities for constituencies and audiences to strengthen AFJ/AFJ Action’s engagement of, and outreach/organizing strategies to do so;
  • Plan, coordinate, and execute AFJ and AFJ Action events that drive education and advocacy aligning with organizational strategies, both virtually and in-person, by recruiting speakers and co-sponsors, building turnout, creating runs of show, solidifying vendors, and providing logistical support. These events include but are not limited to Holding Court and Gavel In events;
  • Build and maintain relationships with national organizations and AFJ’s core constituencies to increase awareness of the importance of the courts and mobilize against or in support of nominations and policy priorities;
  • Lead plan to grow engagement of organizations and individuals that enter AFJ’s network from variety of entry points (i.e. events, specific nominee campaigns, and short-term partnerships);
  • Help with AFJ and AFJ Action’s presence at external meetings, events, and conferences, including supporting session proposals, ordering promotional materials, assisting with AFJ and AFJ Action tabling and visibility opportunities, coordinating internal staff involvement, and more;
  • Work with our Justice team to implement targeted partner engagement tactics for AFJ priority judicial nominations and policies in issue areas, such as court reform and nonprofit advocacy/defense;
  • Serve as the AFJ representative at various coalition meetings and engage in relevant outreach and policy work on priority issue areas, such as court reform;
  • Assist, as necessary, with mobilizing around nonprofit defense when attacks are directed at nonprofit organizations. This could include working with AFJ colleagues in our newly launched program, the Nonprofit Legal Defense Network, ensuring members and partners have the resources and support they need to safely advocate, and more;
  • Work with the Communications team to create sample content for groups to disseminate via newsletters, action toolkits, sample letters to the editor, sign-on letters, and press materials;
  • Support programming, communications, and operational strategies to deepen relationships with AFJ member organizations, grow membership, and identify opportunities for member program to further organizational priorities;
  • Maintain and update data within Every Action, including, but not limited to: tracking metrics, uploading event attendee information, maintaining judicial clerk information, etc.;
  • Participate in work to increase AFJ’s racial equity capacity internally and as embodied in AFJ’s member organization program and partnerships;
  • Assist with managing and planning project priorities for Outreach and Membership summer intern(s);
  • Work across departments to assist with additional organization priorities as necessary;
  • Perform other duties and assist other departments as required.
