Senior Campaign Strategist, Speech and Privacy About The Job

The ACLU seeks applicants for the full-time term‑limited position of Senior Campaign Strategist, Speech & Privacy in the National Political Advocacy Department of the ACLU’s National office in Washington, D.C. This is a hybrid role requiring in‑office attendance two days per week or eight days per month. The position is a three‑year term‑limited role.

The National Political Advocacy Department builds power to achieve an accountable, representative democracy. We pursue ambitious goals across Reproductive Freedom, Democracy and Voting Rights, Systemic Equality, Immigration, Trans Justice, Criminal Justice, and other core issues to protect and expand civil rights and civil liberties.

Your work will involve analysis, policy development, campaign strategy, and coordination with staff and national partners to advance speech, privacy, surveillance and related civil rights issues across legislative, administrative, and electoral levers.

What You’ll Do

The Senior Campaign Strategist, Speech & Privacy will report to the Director of National Campaigns, Democracy.

  • Develop robust campaign goals, plans, strategies, tactics, and budgets in close partnership with the Director of National Campaigns, Democracy.
  • Design and lead complex, multi‑tooled campaigns from planning to execution at the national/federal level to advance speech, privacy, surveillance, and other civil rights and civil liberties issues.
  • Lead legislative, administrative, and corporate campaigns with minimal management guidance.
  • Utilize a wide variety of sophisticated campaign tactics and tools, including constituent targeting, TV, radio, print, polling, earned media, and creative campaign tactics.
  • Retain and manage consultants.
  • Work closely with the Organizing Division on developing relevant campaign plans.
  • Coordinate the day‑to‑day activities of staff working on campaigns in a matrixed structure.
  • Collaborate with other senior stakeholders, affiliate staff, and national staff, including policy staff within NPAD.
  • Develop strategic partnerships that expand the ACLU’s influence beyond what it could achieve alone.
  • Convene and execute on‑ground meetings, planning, and campaign events in priority jurisdictions.
  • Maintain awareness of emerging opportunities and challenges within the division’s purview.
  • Exercise significant independent judgment to solve problems and create creative solutions.
  • Demonstrate flexibility and adapt priorities in response to changing external environments.
  • Engage in special projects and other duties as assigned.
  • Provide flexibility in work schedule, including non‑traditional hours.

What You’ll Bring
  • Significant demonstrated experience with issue advocacy and/or electoral campaigning at the federal, state, and/or local levels, including campaign management experience.
  • Experience designing campaign strategy and executing campaign plans and tactics.
  • Ability to work independently as well as within a team.
  • Excellent research, writing, analytical, and communication skills.
  • Experience building, leading, and working within coalitions.
  • Ability to work in a fast‑paced environment, meet multiple deadlines, and remain composed under pressure.
  • Experience with advocacy on issue and electoral campaigns (a plus).
  • Experience with legislative and administrative advocacy (a plus).
  • Experience with grassroots organizing (a plus).
  • Fluency, expertise, and experience in multiple ACLU issue areas (a plus).
  • Comfort with policy integration into campaign execution.
  • Willingness to travel.
Compensation

The ACLU is committed to equity, transparency, and clarity in pay. There is a set salary for this role based on geographic work location. The annual salary for this position is $161,123 (Level
