Are you an experienced nurse looking for an opportunity to formally lead? The Assistant Nursing Director role is a great position that allows you to remain close to the bedside but allows you to serve as a front-line nurse leader. Med Star Health is seeking a dedicated and engaged Assistant Nursing Director to lead the NICU. As a member of our Division of Nursing's (DON) leadership/management team, you will play a pivotal role in shaping the future of patient care in this specialized field.

Position Overview

In collaboration with the Nurse Director the Assistant Nursing Director is responsible for the leadership and management of the L&D unit at Med Star Washington Hospital Center. The Assistant Nursing Director fosters associates commitment to improving quality, safety, and cost-conscious patient care outcomes. This role offers the chance to direct and coordinate the nursing and patient care delivery of the unit-based professional and support personnel.

Unit Highlights

Our 36 bed Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) is a Level III-B NICU. As a Level III-B NICU, we offer a high level of care for premature and ill newborns. With an annual average of 750 infant admissions, our nursing team has cared for a wide range of conditions including: extreme prematurity, gastroschises, myelomeningocele, diaphragmatic hernia and hypoplastic left heart syndrome.

Our Special Mom Special Baby (SMSB) program supports a unique partnership between Obstetrics and Children’s National Medical Center. The obstetrical service provides coordinated, focused pregnancy care for mothers who themselves have congenital health issues or who are carrying babies with congenital issues. Our NICU nurses also attend high-risk deliveries to focus on the stabilization of critical infants. Our multidisciplinary team consists of neonatologists, registered nurses, respiratory therapists, nutritionists, and social workers.

Key Responsibilities

In collaboration with the Nurse Director, develops department goals, objectives and ensures compliance with hospital policy and procedure, clinical practice, guidelines, and regulatory and accreditation standards.

Provides shift-based clinical leadership through role modeling professional practice behaviors, proper delegation of activities, and management of the nursing team and promotes unit activities that enhance department satisfaction an engagement.

Collaborate with the nursing leadership team, Medical Staff, and leaders of other departments/disciplines to ensure seamless patient care.

Participates in patient rounding to review patient status and connect with patient and family.

Collaborates with the Nursing Director in the hiring, evaluation, promotion, and termination of personnel within the department as needed and initiates coaching and counseling of associates.

Maintains clinical knowledge and skills and engages in the provision of direct care for a caseload of patients as required.

Assumes administrative responsibilities in absence of the director and as needed provides coverage for other colleagues.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in nursing (Master's preferred)
  • DC RN License
  • Approximately three to four years of progressively more responsible job-related experience
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills
