ResponsibilitiesMICU Overview

The Medical Intensive Care Unit (MICU) at The George Washington University Hospital provides expert care for patients with complex, acute, and life‑threatening medical conditions. Our team treats a wide range of diagnoses including sepsis, respiratory failure, renal failure, multi‑organ dysfunction, and complex infectious diseases. The MICU is a dynamic environment where nurses gain expertise in ventilator management, advanced pharmacologic therapies, and multidisciplinary critical care collaboration.

  • Medical ICU (MICU) – 32 beds: Complex medical critical care patients
  • Surgical ICU (SICU) – 24 beds: Post‑operative and surgical specialties
  • Trauma ICU (TICU) – 20 beds: High‑acuity trauma patients
  • Neuro ICU – 20 beds: Neurological and neurosurgical care

Responsibilities

Patient Care: Provide evidence‑based, compassionate care to critically ill medical patients.

Monitoring: Manage ventilators, hemodynamic monitoring systems, and continuous infusions; respond to rapid patient changes.

Collaboration: Partner with intensivists, specialists, respiratory therapists, and care teams to deliver comprehensive care.

Critical Thinking: Manage complex cases including multi‑organ failure, sepsis, and respiratory distress.

Advocacy: Support patients and families through critical illness with empathy and education.

Documentation: Ensure precise and timely charting of patient care.

Education: Guide families through disease processes and recovery expectations.

Quality Improvement: Contribute to improving ICU outcomes and best practices.

Qualifications Requirements
  • Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) required or currently enrolled
  • Washington, D.C. RN license or eligibility
  • 2 years full-time (or 4 years part-time) critical care experience
  • BLS and ACLS required
