Position: Tree Worker (Seasonal)

Duties

The major duties of the Tree Worker position include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Perform regular tree maintenance activities such as tree and shrub pruning, tree removal, planting, transplanting, spraying, and cultivating.
  • Climb trees on a regular basis, which can include trees up to 120 feet in height or higher.
  • Use complex climbing techniques, rope knots, and specialized climbing hardware.
  • Use complex rigging techniques on a regular basis and when the use of a crane is necessary.
Requirements – Conditions of Employment
  • U.S. Citizenship required.
  • Appointment subject to background investigation and favorable adjudication.
  • Meet Selective Service Registration Act requirement for males.
  • Selectee will be required to participate in the Direct Deposit Electronics Funds Transfer Program.

  • Ability to lift 50 pounds.
  • Applicants must be at least 18 years old or at least 16 years old with the appropriate high‑school or equivalent credentials, or be enrolled in a secondary school with appropriate student‑employment arrangements.
  • Considered emergency/essential personnel.
  • May be required to work evenings, weekends, and overtime hours.
Qualifications

To qualify for this position, you must have sufficient knowledge and ability in the following job‑related factors:

  • Ability To Do The Work Of The Position Without More Than Normal Supervision (SCREEN OUT)
  • Ability to Interpret Instructions, Specifications, etc. (includes blueprinting and reading)
  • Ability to Use and Maintain Tools and Equipment
  • Knowledge of Materials
  • Dexterity and Safety
  • Technical Practices (theoretical precise, artistic)
  • Use of Measuring Instruments
  • Condition of Employment (Requirement):

  • Ability to lift 50lbs: Applicants must demonstrate the physical fitness necessary to perform duties, including extended outdoor work in all weather, stooping, kneeling, crouching, climbing, and lifting heavy items in excess of 50 pounds (SCREEN OUT).
  • Commercial Driver's License: Must possess and maintain a current Class B (or higher) Commercial Driver’s License with Air Brake Endorsement (SCREEN OUT).

    Volunteer

    Experience:

    Experience includes paid and unpaid work through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, Ameri Corps) and other organizations. Volunteer work is credited toward required experience.

    Education

    There is no substitution of education for experience for Wage Grade (WG) positions.

    Additional Information

    Non‑Competitive Rehire Eligibility

    Termination and Physical Demands

    Employment may be terminated at any time due to fluctuations in funding, project needs, performance, or other considerations.

    Physical Demands: Frequently carries and/or moves objects up to 100 pounds with assistance, climbs and works from rope rigging, ladders, and lift mechanisms, walking, bending, standing for extended periods, working in cramped or awkward positions.

    Working Conditions

    Required to work inside and outside in all weather, subject to heat, humidity, cold, and contact with chemicals, dirt, and spray residue. Must wear protective equipment and comply with safety regulations (OSHA). Telework is not suitable.
