Overview
GW’s Department of Microbiology, Immunology, and Tropical Medicine (MITM) conducts innovative, fundamental, basic and translational research for HIV / AIDS and neglected tropical diseases. MITM has a strong tradition of training and policy advocacy for these infectious and parasitic diseases, which initiate and perpetuate poverty and suffering worldwide. Hawdon’s Nematode Parasitology Lab to help characterize anthelmintic resistance in hookworms. The position supports controlled laboratory experiments, data collection, and analysis. Experience with animal specimens, including blood, feces, and urine, is essential.
- Maintain several species and strains of hookworms and other nematodes, including infection of hosts and monitoring parasitic infections via fecal egg counting.
- Conduct basic molecular biology and chemistry experiments and work with infectious hookworm larvae.
- Oversee day‑to‑day laboratory operations, record maintenance, and regulatory compliance.
- Manage inventory, ordering, and stocking of supplies.
- Supervise undergraduate and work‑study students.
- Maintain animal handling techniques and practices; work with animals and animal feces.
- Perform other related duties as assigned.
Hold a BA/BS in a related discipline, degree conferred by the start date of the position.
Preferred Qualifications- Experience with basic molecular biological techniques (e.g., RT‑PCR, qPCR, cloning).
- Experience with basic laboratory technique and animal handling (rodents and dogs).
- Excellent written and oral communication skills.
- Familiarity with MS Office, Graph Pad Prism, or R Studio.
- Excellent organizational skills.
- Ability to work well in a team environment.
$17.95 – $22.51 per hour.
