Job Overview
The Research Specialist will work on NIH‑funded studies that examine speech, language, reading, and cognitive abilities in left hemisphere stroke survivors and typical older adults. Responsibilities include recruiting, screening and consenting new participants; administering standardized and experimental tests; running MRI sessions; scoring research assessments; participating in outreach activities; processing and analyzing data; supervising undergraduate research assistants; and contributing to research meetings and administration (e.g., IRB protocols).
The position also offers opportunities to analyze data, present findings at conferences, and contribute to publications.
The Cognitive Recovery Lab at Georgetown University and Med Star National Rehabilitation Hospital (PI: Peter Turkeltaub) studies how language is organized in the brain, how this organization changes with brain injury, and how to improve recovery. The primary focus is aphasia or alexia resulting from stroke. The lab conducts extensive behavioral testing of stroke survivors and control subjects, multimodal MRI studies, and non‑invasive brain stimulation.
Lab members include research SLPs, research specialists, post‑docs, PhD and MD/PhD students, and undergraduate and graduate research assistants. For more information, visit

- Bachelor’s degree and prior research experience in cognitive psychology, neuroscience, or a related field.
- Organized, personable, responsible, reliable, self‑motivated, and efficient.
- Comfortable working with clinical populations.
- Prior MRI research experience and experience working with stroke survivors is highly desirable.
- Programming experience and working knowledge of MATLAB is preferred.
This position is designated On‑Campus. Work mode designations are regularly reviewed.
Pay Range$20.16 – $31.30 per hour. Compensation is determined by qualifications, experience, education, skills, certifications, and the University’s business needs.
