Position: Delivery Driver/Prep Cook (School Meals- Early Hours) Washington D.C.

Our professionally trained chefs create menus, source farm fresh ingredients, and cook delicious, thoughtful, and familiar food. School food matters not only because it’s integral to good health, but because what children eat is an essential part of their cultural identity and sense of self.

About the Role

The Driver/Prep Cook position at Red Rabbit is a multifaceted role designed to contribute to the successful delivery of nutritious meals to school programs in the DC Area and support kitchen operations. This role combines the responsibilities of a driver and a prep cook, offering a unique opportunity to be part of a dynamic team.

Key Responsibilities Delivery Responsibilities
  • Ensure accurate and on-time delivery of meals, supplies, bins, and bags to all schools on the designated route.
  • Act as a key contact for school partners, maintaining exceptional customer service and fostering positive working relationships.
  • Communicate any obstacles or delivery-related problems to team leads promptly.
  • Follow daily reports and route sheets to optimize delivery efficiency.
  • Navigate the DC Area without reliance on GPS and find alternate routes when needed.
  • Practice food safety habits throughout the delivery process.
  • Assist with daily operational tasks needed to ensure the smooth execution of deliveries.
Prep Cook Responsibilities
  • Read menu production sheets to understand the type and quantity of food that will be prepared each day.
  • Collaborate with the culinary team to prioritize the production of daily menu items.
  • Portion and weigh food according to Red Rabbit’s recipes and DC guidelines.
  • Cook, cool, and plate food according to Red Rabbit’s recipes and DC food safety guidelines.
  • Pack and distribute meals to students according to DC compliance portions and school timing.
  • Maintain accurate records of food production to ensure compliance and minimize food waste.
  • Ensure the kitchen is consistently exceeding Department of Health (DOH) standards by maintaining clean workstations and cooking equipment.
  • Represent Red Rabbit’s values and culture when interacting with school staff and students by being professional, helpful, and courteous.
  • Perform any additional duties as assigned.
Skills and Qualifications
  • 3+ years of driving experience in the District of Columbia, with a valid DC driver's license for 3+ years and fewer than 3 points on the license.
  • 2+ years of customer service or retail services experience, demonstrating strong interpersonal skills for building relationships with school partners.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of safe driving ability and DC streets, with the ability to drive multiple sizes of vehicles.
  • 1+ years of professional culinary experience in a fast-paced role in the service industry, high-volume kitchen production, or a similar cafeteria role.
  • Serv Safe Certificate is required.
  • Ability to lift 75 lbs regularly and 50 lbs for the prep cook portion of the role.
  • Strong organizational skills, attention to detail, and the ability to multitask.
  • Ability to work well both independently and in a team, remaining calm and efficient in a fast-moving environment.
  • Proficiency in reading and writing in English; bilingual (English and Spanish) is a plus.
  • Must share our passion for improving nutrition and health in schools.
