Job Description
Metropolitan Police Department Officers (MPD) will provide protective services for the patients, families, staff, and property of Children's National Health System (CNHS). As directed, CNHS MPD Officers respond to emergency situations while enforcing the established hospital policies and in accordance with the laws of the District of Columbia. Department personnel must maintain a tactful and courteous demeanor in the exercising of duties.
They will perform access control using state of the art technology to ensure the safety of patients, conduct security patrols of the entire location assigned to proactively identify risks to the hospital, primarily in the Emergency Departments, frequently work with medical professionals to advance patient safety, and support CNHS Special Police Officers with detention and/or arrest of individuals in violation of DC laws.

Work Experience:
2 years as a police officer in good standing with the Metropolitan Police Department in the District of Columbia (Required) - Required Skills/Knowledge: Metropolitan Police Department Police Officer; effective oral and written communication skills; ability to sit and stand for prolonged periods; climb stairs in response to emergency situations; wear complete Metropolitan Police Department issued uniform and carry department issued radio while on duty; work outdoors if necessary; handle volatile situations under stressful conditions; familiarity with Microsoft Office; excellent customer service skills;
knowledge of the criminal code in Washington, DC; experience working as an emergency responder (law enforcement, fire/rescue, military) - Required Licenses and
Certifications:
Sworn police officer in the Metropolitan Police Department of the District of Columbia (Required);
Cardio-Pulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) (Required)
- Perform productive security patrols of the hospital, garage and perimeter; recognize conditions which are or will compromise the security and/or safety of the organization and take immediate action to mitigate; proactively and consistently submit work orders to correct safety/security violations discovered during patrols.
- Immediately notify supervisors of security/safety-related problems or issues.
- Take proactive measures to mitigate thefts, disturbances and other criminal incidents.
- Check to ensure that visitors and staff members are wearing proper identification badges/passes; ensure that visitors are properly identified and proactively address issues with non-compliance with visitors which are observed during patrols; adhere to departmental and hospital policies, procedures and directives as it relates to the management and processing of visitors to the hospital.
- Adhere to post orders for all fixed and patrol positions.
- Ensure a timely and appropriate response for emergency situations.
- Ensure that the applicable policies, procedures and directives are followed according to the specifics of the emergency situation.
- Able to effectively de‑escalate disruptive behavior.
