Security Officer

Job Overview

We are always looking for great talent for our Security team. This is a full‑time, 40‑hour per week Security Officer role that requires a rotating schedule of four ten‑hour shifts. The museum is open seven days a week and for some holidays. This position requires availability for the following shift rotations and times:

• Monday – Thursday, Sunday – Wednesday, or Thursday – Sunday
• 8:00AM – 6:30PM
• 8:30AM – 7:00PM
• 10:00AM – 8:30PM
• 3:00PM – 11:30PM

The role includes working days, evenings, nights, weekends, holidays, and occasional overtime. Availability for short‑notice duty assignments is also required.

• Conduct hourly building patrols and perform self‑inspections of secure facilities.
• Observe and report safety concerns, security breaches, and unusual circumstances.
• Detect, deter, and prevent incidents while enforcing policies and procedures.
• Respond to emergency calls, perform rescue functions, and maintain calm under crisis.
• Act as on‑scene commander when required and remain on duty until relieved.
• Operate and monitor screening systems, perform secondary screening when alerts are triggered, and coordinate incident escalation.

• High school diploma or GED.
• Minimum 2 years of physical security experience (military, law enforcement, or security in high‑traffic public venues).
• Valid driver’s license; ability to be commissioned as an Unarmed Special Police Officer within one month of hire.
• Prior experience with access control systems, walkthrough metal detectors, handheld wands, or other screening technologies.
• Strong situational awareness, excellent written and oral communication, integrity, self‑motivation, and teamwork skills.
• Physical ability to walk, stand, climb stairs, and perform screening operations for extended periods.

Must be able to perform essential functions that may include long periods of sitting, walking, standing, and climbing stairs. The position requires standing for extended periods, especially during screening operations.

Excellent written, oral, and interpersonal communication skills, the ability to interact with all levels of personnel, and a strong ethical character are required.

Hourly rate: $21.60. Shift differential of 10% is paid for hours worked between 6PM and 6AM.

On‑site staff spending 100% of working time at the museum. Shifts are scheduled over seven days a week and 24 hours a day, including holidays. This position requires full‑time, on‑site presence and is not eligible for visa sponsorship.

Must be legally authorized to work in the United States.

The role does not have supervisory responsibilities.
