Job Overview

The George Washington University Police Department is seeking highly motivated individuals for the position of Police Sergeant. Our goal is to be the premier university law enforcement agency in the region; best paid, best equipped and best trained. The GW Police Department is responsible for providing primary law enforcement and public safety service to a diverse university population of 25,000 students, faculty, and staff across two urban campuses located in Washington, D.C. Reporting to the Police Lieutenant, the Police Sergeant serves as the first‑line supervisor for their assigned shift within the George Washington Police Department. The position supervises the patrol division and is responsible for providing protection of persons and property on campus using police skills and patrolling techniques to maintain a safe environment. The Sergeant provides security and protection to the University community by patrolling areas or buildings to enforce D.C. laws and GW administrative ordinances, and by offering on‑site supervision over officers during emergency and routine situations during a shift.

In addition, the Sergeant manages the preparation of daily assignments and the weekly duty roster, based upon observation and assessment of individual officer skills/performance levels, relative to scheduled protective services activities or special requests. Acts on behalf of the Lieutenant during his/her absence, including approving and posting the weekly duty roster or special assignments. The Sergeant also serves as a liaison with other departments during events or incidents and with outside law enforcement agencies.

  • Provide faculty, staff and students highly efficient and professional protection and service by being present and interacting with the campus community.
  • Oversee the day‑to‑day activities of the University’s community law enforcement services.
  • Work with the Shift Lieutenant for appropriate scheduling of officers to ensure adequate shift coverage, vacation relief, and call‑off replacement; coordinate and schedule additional security at special activities and events on campus as needed.
  • Partner with the Shift Lieutenant to plan and execute shift meetings, roll call, and ensure overall information is shared with assigned shifts.
  • Participate in reviewing and updating GWPD’s policies and procedures; provide subject‑matter expertise to ensure they are accurate and enforceable.
  • Assist in the evaluation and recommendation of new equipment, supplies or special materials to improve security enforcement.
  • Conduct performance‑management evaluations of officers for their assigned shift and assist the Shift Lieutenant in determining future staffing needs.
  • Monitor and ensure staff compliance with departmental policies, procedures, and applicable regulatory requirements.
  • Review body‑worn and in‑car camera video associated with incident reports prior to approving reports to ensure compliance with department policy.
  • Ensure all community policing activities are appropriately and timely documented in ARMS for tracking and review.
  • Review all necessary administrative forms/reports related to public safety incidents and operations; approve reports written and submitted by officers, and assist security officers as needed.
  • Ensure reports are completed accurately and timely.
  • Testify in court or administrative hearings concerning violations or offenses.
