JOB OVERVIEW

Facilities Planning, Construction, and Management (FPCM), a part of the Division of Safety and Facilities, under the Executive Vice President and Chief Administration Officer’s portfolio, builds, manages and maintains GW’s property and grounds on all three campuses.

Facilities Buildings & Grounds (FBG) is currently seeking a Plumber to help support the University’s mission and vision in Facilities Services. FBG, part of GW’s Division of Safety and Operations, maintains GW’s property and grounds on all three campuses. The Plumber will assist the Zone Manager and Zone Leads with the day‑to‑day plumbing operations. The work schedule is Monday – Friday from 7:00 am to 4:00 pm, including a holiday and weekend rotating schedule.

The candidate will be well‑trained in all plumbing applications, highly organized, and a professional who takes pride in their work and can perform various customer service duties as required throughout the day.

The Plumber is responsible for proper operation of all systems and equipment and may lead plumbing maintenance programs, including required repairs, renovations and preventative maintenance so that the university’s primary mission is upheld.

RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Plans, implements, and administers a preventative maintenance program(s) to provide maximum life to facilities in accordance with industry standards.
  • Applies knowledge of plumbing systems in commercial, residential, and academic buildings.
  • Coordinates and facilitates walkthrough inspections and due diligence investigations.
  • Provides regular verbal and written reports to the Facility Zone Manager.
  • Communicates to employees regarding plumbing best practices.
  • Maintains comprehensive knowledge of plumbing trade tools, occupational hazards, safety precautions, local codes, and regulations pertaining to plumbing.
  • Understands and applies FBG goals, objectives, policies, and procedures, and works effectively in a multi‑ethnic, multi‑cultural environment.
  • Schedules plumbing work orders with GW stakeholders and performs quality‑control inspections for contractor assignments.
  • Advises administrators on possible alternatives to proposed plumbing projects and equipment purchases.
  • Provides instructions and assistance in solving work‑related problems and performing specific plumbing tasks.
  • Performs other work‑related duties as requested.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Qualified candidates will hold a high school diploma/GED plus 1.5 years of relevant professional experience, or a bachelor’s degree or higher in a relevant area of study (degree must be conferred by the start date). Degree requirements may be substituted with an equivalent combination of education, training and experience.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
  • Ability to understand and review architectural and related mechanical drawings, including as‑built.
  • DC Journeyman Plumbing License preferred; reciprocity accepted.
  • Graduation from a trades school or completion of a certified plumbing program with emphasis on plumbing/gas fitting preferred.
  • Experience in the plumbing trade and working knowledge of building and plumbing codes preferred.
  • Ability to make material take–offs and time allotments for plumbing projects.
  • Knowledge of mathematics, formulas, and some design ability of building plumbing systems.
  • Ability to work with minimal supervision.
  • Competent communication and correspondence skills; understanding of DC building codes.
  • Ability to interact with a diverse population, including students, faculty, staff, contractors and vendors.
  • Ability to utilize and manage work‑order ticket systems such as Assetworks or other CMMS.
  • Knowledge of safe work practices and injury/illness prevention practices preferred.
