Duties
- Installs and repairs air condition systems to provide exact temperature levels in special conditions.
- Identify the cause of faulty air conditioning equipment and provide repairs, modifications and relocates equipment on various special-purpose air conditioning units and systems.
- Operates utility systems of extremely large capacity and flexibility.
- Troubleshoots unusual malfunctions on advanced equipment and systems.
- Serves as "operator in charge" of utility systems operations.
- Maintains, operates, and repairs boilers or emergency electrical generators.
- You must be a United States Citizen or National.
- You will be required to complete a pre-employment security investigation and background check which includes a drug screening.
- You may be required to complete a probationary or trial period.
- Selective Service registration is required for males born on, or after, December 31, 1959. Those not registered should have an approved exemption on file.

- You will lift objects weighing 20 - 50 pounds. Upon occasion, may have to lift objects in excess of 50 pounds.
- You are exposed to the possibility of cuts, bruises, scrapes, shock, broken bones, and burns. Protective clothing and devices must be worn to minimize the potential for accidents.
- Standing, walking, stooping, bending, kneeling, climbing, and crawling are required. Work may be performed in cramped or awkward positions.
- Works indoors in areas that usually have adequate light, heat, and fresh air, as well as outdoors in all kinds of weather.
To qualify for the position of Utility Systems Repairer - Operator, at WG-4742-11you must meet the basic qualification requirements listed below.
Qualifications:
Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, Ameri Corps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religions; spiritual; community; student; social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.
There is no specific length of training or experience required. However, you must be able to demonstrate, through experience shown in your written application materials that you possess the sufficient knowledge, skills, and abilities to successfully perform the work of this position without more than normal supervision.
1) Ability to do the work of a Utility Systems Repairer Operator without more than normal supervision;
Knowledge of boiler plant, HVAC, water treatment plant operations and mechanics is required. Experience includes running a centralized, multiple zone air conditioning system and a high temperature/pressure boiler plant that contains more components, controls, gauges, electromechanical, electronics and auxiliary equipment than the standard type; troubleshooting maintaining, repairing and replacing defective equipment and components in energy plants and HVAC systems; interpretating engineering drawings that combine electrical and electronic schematics, logic diagrams, and mechanical drawings in order to trace signal flow throughout a system;
and using tools and test equipment to troubleshoot components and make repairs.
