Embedded Software Engineer | Defense, Aerospace & Critical Infrastructure
📍 Washington DC | Hybrid, 3 days onsite (Tue/Wed/Thu)
We’re working with a fast-growing, mission-driven technology scale‑up operating across defense, aerospace, and critical infrastructure. The company builds advanced onboard operational technology, combining embedded systems, cybersecurity, and real‑time data processing to help complex fleets operate more safely and efficiently.
They’re now looking to add an Embedded Software Engineer to their growing engineering team.
The roleThis position is hands‑on and technically deep. You’ll be developing real‑time, high‑performance embedded software deployed on custom Linux‑based hardware platforms, working closely with hardware, FPGA, and data teams.
You’ll be involved in:- Developing and optimising embedded software for custom Linux‑based systems
- Writing low‑level software including kernel drivers and userspace APIs
- Working with memory‑mapped registers, DMA, and hardware/software interfaces
- Profiling and tuning systems for low latency and high reliability
- Supporting hardware bring‑up and board‑level debugging
- Writing unit, functional, and integration tests
- Participating in design reviews, code reviews, and documentation
- 3+ years of experience in embedded or low‑level software development
- Strong experience with C, C++, or Rust
- Strong experience with Embedded Linux
- Embedded Linux experience, including Yocto or Buildroot
- Low‑level debugging experience (GDB, JTAG)
- Kernel driver development experience is a plus
- Exposure to FPGA, RTL, or DSP is a plus, not essential
- Work on real, mission‑critical systems
- High ownership and visibility of your work
- Strong engineering culture with cross‑disciplinary collaboration

- Base salary range: $120,000–$180,000
