Mapbox is looking to hire motivated, curious, and innovative Software Development Engineers for the Navigation, Traffic team. We develop and maintain the web services powering Mapbox’s strategic navigation initiatives in consumer, automotive, and logistics. This multidisciplinary team works on distributed systems on AWS, geospatial localization, traffic telemetry, and mapping. As AI becomes embedded in modern engineering workflows, we value engineers who can thoughtfully integrate AI into design, development, and decision-making.

As a Software Development Engineer II on the Navigation Traffic team, you will balance rapid development of new navigation solutions with the reliability of services as they scale. You may write robust application code for large data sets, build and deploy microservices, diagnose complex system behavior under varying traffic, and support continuous delivery at Mapbox.

• Collaborate with your team to identify and scope out well-defined tasks
• Execute on the scope and deliver on time with quality
• Design systems and make decisions that scale with Mapbox’s growing customer base
• Promote operational excellence by testing and monitoring systems, writing documentation, and supporting the health of services
• Reduce technical debt, share knowledge, and invest in teammates’ health and happiness while optimizing performance and feature velocity
• Foster a culture of collaboration, transparency, creativity, inclusion, and data-driven decisions

• 5+ years of experience building scalable high-volume, low-latency backend services
• Experience with modern programming languages (Python, Rust, Typescript, Java, Go, C++)
• Proficiency with cloud services (preferably AWS) in monitoring instrumentation, diagnostics, issue resolution, and continuous product improvement
• Experience integrating AI into design, development, and decision-making. Our interview process will discuss how you use AI in your engineering workflow
• Familiarity with code versioning tools such as Git Hub
• Ability to engage, learn and contribute quickly to initiatives
• Ability to perform independently all development tasks based on designs and specs
• Self-starter who is communication and outcomes-oriented
• Empirical analytical approach with strong hypotheses, spikes, and clear communications of findings
• Desire to share expertise through documentation, mentorship, pairing, and discussion
• Desire to work with individuals from diverse backgrounds, perspectives, and experiences
• High quality mindset — write unit tests, remedy defects proactively, and follow through to production

• Experience and knowledge within the navigation domain
• Experience with Amazon Elasti Cache
• Experience with SQL
• Experience with Big Data/ML
• Experience with various security standards and related technical knowledge

Our annual base compensation for this role ranges from $160,650 - $217,350 for most US locations, with 5% to 10% higher for locations with a higher cost of labor. Job level and compensation are decided based on qualifications, experience, potential impact, scope, market demands, and location.
