This position is located in the Department of Youth Rehabilitation Services (DYRS), Administrative Services, Fleet Management Division (FMD). The mission of DYRS is to improve public safety and give court involved youth the opportunity to become more productive citizens by building on the strengths of youths and their families in the least restrictive, most homelike environment consistent with public safety.
This role is responsible for operating a variety of vehicles including pickup trucks, panel trucks, flatbed trucks, carryalls, sedans, crew cab pickup trucks, and vans. Operates specific vehicles based on trip assignments or regularly established schedules over public roads (or the equivalent) to transport personnel, supplies, materials, equipment or tools, tow equipment, or complete general tasks. Incumbent will operate vehicles over Federal, District, State, and County roads and city streets in all traffic conditions.
Dutiesand Responsibilities
The Motor Vehicle Operator maintains the overall operation of a variety of motor vehicles with a gross weight of 22,000 pounds or less. Picks up and delivers inter/intra agency mail and official government documents (i.e. youth birth certificates, staff government identification badges, medical supplies, and off-cycle checks) to all DYRS facilities and other various agencies. Verifies against written records that the correct equipment and/or documentation has been collected.
Maintains a record of delivery by obtaining signatures, confirming delivery and receipt of equipment and/or documentation.
The incumbent loads and unloads the vehicle(s) by hand, sometimes receiving help from other workers. Ensure cargo is protected from the weather and that it is properly distributed and secured to prevent damage or loss while in transit. Maintains current record of travel log, vehicle and equipment inspections, and preventative maintenance records. Ensures any equipment being towed does not exceed the maximum weight allowable for the vehicle being driven, and that it is connected to the vehicle according to local and Federal regulations.
Performs operator maintenance and wash vehicles in compliance with established policies and/or procedures.

Must possess a valid driver’s license to operate a DC Government vehicle.
Drivers work mostly outside and operate vehicles in all kinds of weather in a controlled traffic environment; in all types of traffic and weather on public roads and are exposed to the danger of serious accidents. Drivers must drive in heavy traffic and at highway speeds over complicated road and interchange systems. Drivers are exposed to dirt, fumes, and to the possibility of cuts, bruises, and broken bones as a result of accidents while driving or from falling objects when loading and unloading the vehicle.
