JOB SUMMARY

The interpreter provides interpreting and/or transliterating services for Deaf and Hard of Hearing students and hearing consumers to ensure equitable communication access across academic, social, extracurricular, and community-based settings. In addition to delivering professional interpreting services, the interpreter supports instructional access and specially designed instruction under the supervision of certificated staff, functions as a collaborative member of the educational team, and upholds professional standards aligned with Deaf culture, interpreter ethics, and educational best practices.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

* Provide interpreting/transliterating for Deaf and hard-of-hearing students, classmates, and educational staff in classrooms and school-related activities.

* Interpret/transliterate all grade levels (K-12) in social and academic settings, including but not limited to: direct and incidental conversations, classroom instruction, assemblies, field trips, and extracurricular activities to ensure full access to instruction and participation.

* Participate in educational team meetings, including IEP meetings, and provide insight regarding communication strategies and student access (optional).

* Collaborate with Teachers of the Deaf, general education teachers, and related service providers to support communication access and instructional continuity.

* Prepare for classroom interpreting assignments by reviewing lesson materials, vocabulary, and academic concepts to support accurate interpretation and reinforcement of instruction.

* Support the implementation of specially designed instruction under the supervision and direction of certificated staff, reinforcing academic concepts as presented by the teacher without supplanting direct instruction.

* If qualified and outlined in the IEP, provide structured tutoring or academic reinforcement under the supervision of a certificated teacher.

* Assist in community-based instructional settings when part of the student's educational program to ensure communication access and participation.

* Promote understanding of the interpreter's role within the school setting.

* Adapt interpreting methods to match student developmental levels, language proficiency, and educational needs.

* Maintain strict confidentiality and adhere to the RID Code of Professional Conduct while collaborating with school personnel.

* Perform additional duties as assigned, consistent with the responsibilities of an educational interpreter as assigned by Special Services or building administrator.

* Assist in community-based instructional settings when required by the student's educational program.

* Participate in professional development to enhance interpreting and instructional skills, and educational best practices.

* Perform basic computer tasks (email, documentation, word processing).

* Support students in educational environments, including physical assistance consistent with student needs and district guidelines.

* Report to assigned duty areas promptly and reliably

* Provide first aid in case of illness and/or injury and report accidents to the building office

* Dress in a manner that is professional and appropriate to the situation

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Education/Training

* High school diploma or equivalent.

* Graduation from a recognized Interpreter Training Program (ITP).

* One of the following:

* Educational Interpreter Performance Assessment (EIPA) minimum score of 4.0 and passing written test; OR

* National Interpreter Certification (RID) and passing EIPA written test.

* Current First Aid/CPR certification or willingness to obtain.

* Successful completion of the district screening and/or skills assessment process.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES

* Fluency in American Sign Language (ASL) and English.

* Knowledge of Deaf culture.

* Knowledge of the RID Code of Professional Conduct and interpreter ethics.

* Ability to interpret/transliterate effectively across academic subjects and grade levels (as evidenced through a district screening committee).

* Demonstrated skills in communicating effectively with all staff and students and as a team member, both verbally and in writing

* Understanding of educational terminology and classroom instructional practices.

* Ability to support instruction while maintaining appropriate professional role boundaries.

* Ability to collaborate as a member of the educational team.

* Ability to work with students in a warm and confident manner.

* Demonstrated ability to work effectively with a diverse group of students, teachers, parents, and administrators in a confidential manner.

* Relates positively to youth and adults of varying socioeconomic, cultural, and ethnic backgrounds.

* Ability to work independently with minimal supervision.

* Ability to maintain strict confidentiality .
