Summary

This position provides services to students who speak English as their second language and students needing literacy development at the high school level. We are interested in candidates who are committed to students and to enhancing their ML and literacy skills. The classroom instructor creates a positive learning environment to facilitate the personal, social, and intellectual development of students in both of their languages.

Responsibilities include testing and evaluating students for ML and literacy support; providing ML and literacy support in reading, writing, and speaking instruction in the general education setting; co-designing activities and lesson plans with the ELA team; and maintaining student records. Instructor will also work closely with staff, administration, parents, and students to ensure an equitable education for students.

Required Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university
  • Valid Washington State teaching certification appropriate with endorsement (ELL/ESL, Spanish)
  • WSP/FBI background and fingerprint clearance (fee paid by the employee)
Desired Qualifications
  • Spanish and English fluency
  • Ability to communicate effectively in written and oral form using positive interpersonal skills with a variety of stakeholders
  • Experience designing and delivering reading intervention and support
  • Skilled in data review and analysis for tracking student growth
  • Experience co-teaching
  • Able to design and run small group interventions
  • Strong pedagogical knowledge in both ESL and the science of reading
  • Knowledge of and familiarity with Washington’s language proficiency test: WIDA
  • Ability to learn and use learning and data management systems, such as Skyward, Empower, and Gmail suites
  • Maintains a high level of confidentiality
  • Has good organizational skills; meets timelines appropriately
  • Ability to reflect and apply knowledge from current research on best ELL practices for improving student achievement
  • Develop reports to show student progress
Examples of Duties

This list of essential functions is not exhaustive and may be supplemented as necessary and without notice. Depending upon individual assignments, the teacher performs all or a combination of several of the following duties:

  • Organize and deliver appropriate ML and literacy instruction to help students successfully meet academic standards. The instructional program must foster English language acquisition, develop ELA skills, and enhance academic progress
  • Utilize data to inform instructional planning and monitor the effectiveness of the ML and literacy instruction at the core, supplemental, and intensive instruction/intervention levels
  • Establish and maintain appropriate standards for classroom behavior to provide a supportive and productive learning environment
  • Support ML and literacy students in career and college readiness endeavors, including attending pertinent meetings
  • Collaborate with ELA team to co-develop and co-teach instruction to support ML students and students needing literacy support
  • Administer and evaluate WIDA assessment data upon entry, continuation, and exit of program
  • Tutor individual students or groups of students in various content and curriculum assignments
  • Maintain records of student progress related to individual and program goals
  • Support the identification process and services provided for students who qualify for support under Title III
