POSITION HOURS AND PAY: 6.5 hours per day at 164 days per year and 3.5 hours per day at 14 days per year. 7 hours per day for 4 days for first year and 2 days each year following until certification completed. Position pay: PSE Salary Schedule Level 5 - $24.76.
THIS IS A 1:1 SUPPORT PARA EDUCATOR POSITION. A CHANGE IN ASSIGNMENT AND/OR LOCATION MAY OCCUR BASED ON STUDENT SPECIFIC NEEDS AND VARIANCES IN ENROLLMENT.
Required Training: Right Response Training within 3–5 months of hire; renewal annually; must complete Fundamental Course of Studies (FCS) and General Para educator Certificate per state requirements.
Federal Minimum Employment Requirements:
- Must be 18 years of age; and
- Hold high school diploma or its equivalent; and one of the following:
- Successfully passed the ETS Para Pro test or Pearson Paraprofessional assessment
- AA degree or higher
- Earned 72 quarter credits or 48 semester credits at an accredited institution
- Completion of registered apprenticeship program offered by Washington State Dept. of Labor & Industries
- Successful completion of The Master Teacher Inc. Para educator Online Training Program
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
Instructs moderately to severely handicapped students individually or in small groups in various learning activities to promote understanding. Provides encouragement, reinforcement and achievement of educational objectives as defined by certificated staff. Assists with objective test administration.Communicates with certificated staff regarding student progress; adjusts methods; consults for remediation or enrichment.Assists certificated staff in maintaining records, logs, charts, assignments, and other records for student progress assessment.Attends to student physical and safety needs; monitors medical risks such as seizures; corrects behaviors and maintains discipline per policies.Assists students with toileting, including catheterization and diapering; attends to personal hygiene needs; helps wash hands, face, brush teeth and hair, and shower.Assists students with interpersonal and personal skills mastery; helps feed students and teaches social aspects of eating.Assists with basic living skills and pre‑vocational activities; works with students to develop communication skills; facilitates peer integration.Establishes effective communication with students, staff and parents for progress and safety, and community relations.Provides physical assistance such as lifting or positioning; uses adaptive equipment; follows procedures established by physical therapist.Monitors need for first aid and refers for treatment as appropriate.Maintains cleanliness and hygiene of classroom; washes dishes, cleans and disinfects tables and counters; washes and dries clothes, towels, washcloths and bibs.Alerts qualified district staff to student problems.Locates, prepares or modifies materials for student use, enrichment activities and special projects under direction of certificated staff.Prepares, duplicates, collates and distributes materials; operates office equipment.Maintains physical appearance of classroom and other areas; organizes and stores therapeutic equipment; maintains supplies.May serve on district committees or departmental work teams; models appropriate behavior and protects confidential information.Performs related duties consistent with the scope and intent of the position.REPORTING RELATIONSHIPS: Reports to the school principal or assigned administrator; receives guidance from certificated staff.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Education and Experience: Education, training, skills, and experience needed to carry out the assignment; experience with school‑age children and special needs students preferred. Includes non‑violent crisis intervention, use of PECS, visual schedules, social stories, universal precautions, toilet teaching, child development, autism spectrum needs, and sensory processing.
