Job Description

DESCRIPTION:

The primary role of the Elementary Special Education Teacher is to maximize each student's potential. The Elementary Resource Teacher provides specially designed instruction to K-5 students eligible for special education services. This role supports academic, behavioral, and functional skill development through push-in and pull-out instruction based on IEPs. The resource room teacher collaborates with general education staff, families, and related service providers to support student access to grade-level curriculum, monitor progress toward IEP goals, and ensure compliance with special education requirements.

QUALIFICATIONS:

1. Knowledge of special education processes.

2. Valid Washington State Teaching Certificate.

3. Special Education Endorsement (K-12 or Elementary SPED).

4. Knowledge of IDEA and WA special education rules.

5.

Experience with differentiated instruction and behavior supports preferred.

6. Conduct diagnostic/functional assessments as a member of a team.

7. Experience as a case manager, ensuring compliance with timelines and documentation requirements.

8.

10. Capable of identifying and implementing methods and/or strategies to facilitate success pursuant to individual student ability.

13. Communicate effectively with staff, students, parents, administrators and agencies.

14. Work closely with related staff.

15. Work with individual students or small groups and/or give direct instruction to individuals or groups.

16. Demonstrate community awareness and knowledge of various support agencies.

17. Promote team building.

18. Demonstrate student advocacy.

Reports to:

RESPONSIBILITIES:

1. Case manage students on your roster to ensure special education services, SDI minutes, SDI locations, related services, accommodations, and LRE settings.

2. Administer assessments.

3. Keep timelines and maintain records in an organized manner.

4. Act as a liaison between general education staff and special education.

5. Assist regular education in adapting curriculum to meet student needs.

6. Act as a liaison between agencies and school.

7. Plan/develop/administer functional curriculum with general education and special education staff.

8. Comply with compliance items: SDI services, SDI minutes, and progress monitoring.

9. Supervise para educator(s).

10. Other duties deemed necessary and appropriate by the supervisor.

WORKING CONDITIONS:

Working area will be in a special education classroom. Provide specially designed instruction to students. Maintain inventory and equipment assigned to classroom. Provide programming within budgetary constraints. Teaching assignment will be determined on an annual basis by the Director of Special Education.

Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate, or consistent with the subject being taught, but can be abnormally loud on occasion.

While performing the duties of this job, the teacher may occasionally work in outside weather conditions and be exposed to wet and/or humid conditions, temperature fluctuations, fumes or airborne particles, toxic or caustic chemicals commonly used in instruction and/or cleaning.
