Position:
Special Education Teacher (3 positions)
This is a Non‑Exempt position. The incumbent works effectively with students who are academically, socially, and emotionally disabled, as well as parents, staff, and support personnel, to meet educational objectives and devise appropriate programs for each individual student under their care. The Special Education Teacher, under the supervision of the Special Education Director, is responsible for maintaining the learning environment in their classroom on a daily basis and requires flexibility and careful planning and coordination that is generally uncommon for most mainstream classrooms.
QualificationsMinimum Qualifications:
- Education and Training – Typically requires an AA or BA in education.
- Requires a current valid Washington State Teaching Certificate, with Special Education Endorsement.
- Requires a First Aid/CPR card within 30 days of hire.
- Requires passing Washington State, Federal Bureau of Investigation, and Colville Tribal History Background Checks.
- Requires a valid Washington State Driver’s License and eligibility for Tribal Insurance.
- Requires proof of degree, transcripts, and three letters of reference provided with application.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
- Knowledge of instruction using the State Common Core Standards relevant to the content areas taught.
- Knowledge of standard‑based instruction and grading.
- Ability to maintain communications between staff, administration, students, and parents.
- Ability to maintain a good learning environment in the resource room.
- Ability to maintain a comprehensive in‑class discipline program.
- Ability to deal with a wide range of unacceptable behaviors, within the confines of the program, considering the exceptional nature of the students.
- Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with supervisors and subordinates.
- Ability to maintain strict confidentiality.
- Ability to keep accurate records on student progress toward objectives/goals.
- Ability to plan and supervise the activities of an instructional Teacher Aid.
- Ability to plan, direct, and teach an individualized instruction program.
- Must attend all prescribed training and workshops, which may involve travel.
Physical Abilities:
- Must function indoors in an office environment engaging primarily in sedentary work.
- Ambulatory ability to sit for extended periods, use microcomputers and peripheral equipment, and move about campus locations.
- Near vision to read printed materials.
- Auditory ability to conduct conversations in person and over the phone.
- Ability to retrieve work materials from overhead, waist, and ground level files.
- Sustained repetitive motions and manual and finger dexterity to write, use a pointing device, keyboard, and operate microcomputer and other office equipment.
- Must demonstrate sound mental and physical health.
Pursuant to Tribal Policy, safety‑sensitive positions are subject to pre‑employment drug testing. This position is also subject to reasonable suspicion and post‑accident drug testing.
Tribal Member and Indian Preference will apply; preference will also be given to honorably discharged veterans who are minimally qualified.
If required, a valid Washington State driver’s license and eligibility for the Tribes’ vehicle insurance are necessary. This position may be subject to pre‑employment background clearances, which must be maintained throughout employment.
