Location: Soap Lake

Homeless Student Liaison offered at Soap Lake School District

Families or unaccompanied minors who lack a fixed, regular and adequate nighttime residence:

  • Temporarily sharing housing
  • Living in motels or camping grounds due to lack of alternative accommodations
  • Using a public or private place not ordinarily designed for sleeping as a nighttime residence
  • Living in emergency shelters or transitional housing
  • Awaiting foster care placement

Talk to a counselor at the student's local school or call the district's homeless liaison.

Responsibilities:

  • Organize transportation to the student's school of origin or assist with enrollment in the local school without delay.
  • Provide referrals to health care, dental, mental health, and other appropriate services.
  • Ensure homeless students are not penalized for infractions related to their homelessness.
  • Under the McKinney‑Vento Act, allow students to attend their school of origin "to the extent feasible," considering factors such as age, impact of commute on education, personal safety issues, need for special instruction, length of stay in temporary shelters, and time remaining in the school year.
  • Enroll homeless students in their local school "immediately," even if parents or guardians, proof of residency, immunization records, school records, or other normally required documents are missing.
  • Help enrolled students obtain records from their last school and any medical records.
