Position Hours and Pay

5 hours per day at 178 days per year. 7 hours per day for 4 days for the first year and 2 days each year following until certification is completed. Position pay: PSE Salary Schedule Level 5 – $24.76 (25-26 PSE SALARY SCHEDULE).

Required Training:
Must successfully complete the Fundamental Course of Studies (FCS) and General Para educator Certificate of the state mandated Para educator Certificate Program per State requirements. Para educator Certificate Program is dependent upon State funding.

Federal Minimum Employment Requirements:
Must be 18 years of age; hold a high school diploma or its equivalent; and one of the following: successfully passed the ETS Para Pro test or Pearson Paraprofessional assessment; an AA degree or higher; 72 quarter credits or 48 semester credits at an accredited institution of higher education; completion of a registered apprenticeship program offered by the Washington State Dept.

of Labor & Industries; successful completion of The Master Teacher Inc. Para educator Online Training Program.

Job Description

This position's responsibilities are to assist certificated staff with instructional and non-instructional activities for students considered academically "at risk," working individually or in small groups, under a categorical remediation program titled Learning Assistance Program (LAP), including maintaining program records and preparing classroom materials under the supervision of a LAP Specialist.

Essential Functions
  • Instruct students individually or in small groups in a variety of subject areas, settings, and learning activities. Implements methods to best serve individual students academically and behaviorally under the direction of certificated staff; promotes student understanding of materials.
  • Assist with program compliance with statutes and regulations by maintaining accurate data and program records on the computer; maintains records and files in the required format.
  • Work as a member of the program instructional team to provide programs and services to eligible students.
  • Might pull students out of regular classroom for remediation as directed by the program coordinator. Locates, prepares, and/or modifies materials for student use under the direction of certificated staff.
  • Communicate with certificated staff concerning individual student needs and progress; assist with developing schedules for tutoring; adapt and present lessons; check and score student assignments.
  • Assist with administration of objective screening of students for program qualification and eligibility; set up testing schedules, order tests, score tests, and record results; communicate information to teachers so they may notify parents.
  • Document progress of assigned student; maintain program coordination records manually and on computer, and assist in preparing student progress reports; assist with program achievement tests.
  • Maintain a variety of program files and records according to established procedures and timelines, including student lists and program inventory; may provide information for program audits; prepare reports as directed.
  • Construct learning tools such as flash cards, number games, and other learning materials; may research and locate learning materials; compile materials for student assignments; may order materials and supplies as needed.
  • Supervise student behavior and assist teacher with classroom management; facilitate mastery of social adjustment skills; ensure that students stay on task; discipline students as authorized.
  • Type, duplicate, collate and distribute program materials. May create posters and charts and design bulletin boards. Operate a variety of office equipment and computers.
  • Maintain physical appearance of the classroom and assigned areas; straighten chairs and tables; put materials away after use.
  • Other Functions
  • Alert qualified district staff to student problems.
  • When meeting program review standards, provide general clerical support; maintain program files and records; provide teacher support by duplicating materials, and perform related tasks.
  • Attend a variety of staff and program meetings as requested.
  • May serve on various district committees and/or departmental work teams. Model appropriate and cooperative behavior, including protecting confidential information, consistent with district ethical guidelines.
  • Perform related duties consistent with the scope and intent of the position.
  • Reporting Relationships

    Reports to the school principal. Receives guidance from a basic skills specialist; coordinates with certificated staff.
