DESCRIPTION:

As a member of the district school counseling staff, a counselor contributes to student success in visible and meaningful ways. The counselor provides activities and services that develop the academic, career and personal/social competencies of students, consults with teachers, staff and parents to enhance their effectiveness in helping students, and advances the mission of the school/district.

1. Valid Washington State Educational Staff Associate School Counselor Certificate required.

2.

Experience with a comprehensive school counseling program.

3. Knowledge of current graduation requirements.

4. Communicate effectively with staff, parents, students and agencies when necessary.

5. Demonstrate community awareness.

6. Promote team building.

7. Demonstrate student advocacy.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

1. Implement the district's School Counseling Program by supporting the program philosophy, by utilizing data, by delivering student-centered competency-based services, and by managing resources effectively and efficiently.

2. Facilitate and coordinate educational and career planning to assist students and their parents with transitions in the K-12 schooling process.

3. Consult with parents, teachers and other support personnel to support student performance, encourage academic challenge and promote rigorous plans of study.

4. Contribute to Pre-K - 12 guidance curriculums that integrate the Washington State Learning Goals, Essential Academic Learning Requirements, state graduation requirements, and competencies for academic, career and personal/social development.

5. Provide individual and small group counseling and/or activities and classroom visitations that enhance academic success, career planning and personal/social adjustment.

6. Maintain active contact with community social services and refer students and/or their parents to appropriate agencies as needed.

7. Participate in building-level School Improvement Planning processes, including data collection and analysis, to improve school climate and enhance student success, master schedules and student scheduling.

8. Monitor, evaluate and continually improve the School Counseling Program.

9. Pursue professional growth that maintains state-of-the-art knowledge and skills in school counseling.

10. Adhere to ethical guidelines and state/federal mandates.

11. Other activities assigned by the supervisor that are deemed necessary and appropriate.

WORKING CONDITIONS:

Working area will be in a high school.

CAREER OPPORTUNITIES:

Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate, or consistent with the subject being taught, but can be abnormally loud on occasion.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee may occasionally work in outside weather conditions and be exposed to wet and/or humid conditions, temperature fluctuations, fumes or airborne particles, toxic or caustic chemicals commonly used in instruction and/or cleaning. It may be expected that the individual could be exposed to blood or other potentially infectious materials during the course of their duties.

The employee may be exposed to infectious disease as carried by students.

The employee may be required to travel in school owned or leased vehicles while supervising and assisting students.
