Position Description

Secondary Health Sciences Teacher

Position Definition:

The Health Sciences Careers program prepares students for a wide range of careers in the medical/health field by combining academic principles with real-life applications of health sciences and medical occupations. Courses may include:
Health Sciences Careers, Advanced Health Sciences Careers/+internships, Disaster Leadership, and Family Health. The position includes coordination of practical on-site field experiences within the community.

Required Qualifications:

* Career and Technical Education (CTE) certified to teach Health Sciences in the State of Washington, or the ability to become CTE certified. Certification may be obtained by demonstrating three years of gainful employment in the medical field, two of which must be within the past six years. Other requirements for certification may be obtained during the first two years of teaching.

* A bachelor's degree is preferred; although with medical experience as stated above, this can be overridden.

* Work experience in therapeutic branch of the health care field (patient care) such as nursing, sports medicine, and/or medical type technicians.

* Ability to teach to a variety of developmental levels, grades 9-12.

* Certified CPR/First Aid Instructor (American Heart Association preferred) or willing to become certified within the first 6 months of employment.

* Experience with disaster relief, disaster preparedness (Red Cross/CERT) preferred.

Essential Abilities or Characteristics:

Must adhere to the Career and Technical Education program standards set by the Superintendent of Public Instruction for Washington State. Standards include:

* Provide student leadership opportunities for further growth and professional development which may include participation in HOSA or other related club activity.

* Lead and/or participate in CTE Medical Sciences advisory committee meetings.

* Attend state-sponsored workshops and conferences.

* Align classes with post-secondary education.

* Develop and maintain business partnerships.

Must also have the ability to:

* Design learning experiences and assessments that allow students to demonstrate learning.

* Be enthusiastic about teaching believing that each student can learn.

* Teach cooperatively as a member of an interdisciplinary team.

* Maintain effective student management in a non-coercive, positive environment.

* Have flexibility with students, staff, and physical space in an evolving educational environment.

* Have a positive outlook.

Terms of Employment: continuing contract for the  school year with salary (Base, TRI, Ext Day, Class Funds, Start Up, PLD) and benefits provided as described in the benefit section below. Currently, salary is based on the  certificated salary schedule.

Advisor Stipend $3,188.78 $ 9,364.37

National Board Stipend $3,908.00 $ 6,514.00

Prep Buyback $70.22 $ 132.15

Extended Day by Time sheet $50.16 $ 94.40
