Dean of Students
Battle Ground High School
JOB GOAL:
The primary purpose of this position is to assist the building principal in providing leadership by establishing, promoting and leading efforts that align with the District's mission. The Dean of Students will foster an environment characterized by high expectations, data-driven decision making, continuous improvement, capacity building, and cultural competence. Under the direction of the principal, the Dean of Students will provide proactive leadership to engage all stakeholders in the delivery of programs and services to support the students' academic achievement, personal and social development.
The Dean of Students works cooperatively with the principal, counselors, nursing staff, students and parents towards a positive school climate. May evaluate certificated and/or classified staff if holding valid administrative credentials.
QUALIFICATIONS:
1. Valid Washington State Administrator credential, or demonstrated interest in working towards that credential preferred
2. Three years of experience at secondary level preferred
3. Ability to communicate effectively, orally and in writing, with students, staff, and patrons
4. Proven leadership skills
5. Knowledge of, and ability to apply discipline strategies
6. Skills in human relationships to earn the respect of students, staff, and families
7. Ability to work effectively as an active participant in the Building's Management Team
8. Such other qualifications as may be acceptable to the Board of Directors and Superintendent

* Develops and sustains focus on a shared mission and vision for improvement of teaching and learning
* Engages in essential conversations for ongoing improvement
* Facilitates collaborative processes leading toward continuous improvement
* Builds positive relationships with students, staff, parents and community members
* Collaborates and communicates effectively with key stakeholders through a variety of methods
* Creates opportunities for shared leadership
ENSURING SCHOOL SAFETY:
* Provides for physical safety
* Provides for social, emotional and intellectual safety
* Provides leadership of behavior management and supervision
* Provides Positive Behavioral Interventions and Support (PBIS)
* Creates and implements student behavior expectations
* Employs conflict resolution strategies
* Assists building management in the areas of developing, implementing and monitoring procedures and practices which promote a safe and orderly environment
* Establishes and maintains standards of student behavior needed to provide an orderly, productive and safe environment for learning
* Works collaboratively and collegially with a team, managing student behavior
* Possesses knowledge of State RCW's and WAC's as well as District Policies and Procedures regarding student discipline
PLANNING WITH DATA:
* Recognizes and seeks out multiple data sources
* Uses technology in keeping records
* Analyzes and interprets multiple data sources to inform school-level improvement efforts
ALIGNING CURRICULUM:
* Assists staff in aligning curriculum to state and local district learning goals
* Assists staff in aligning best instructional practices to state and district learning goals
* Assists staff in aligning assessment practices to best instructional practices
IMPROVING INSTRUCTION:
* Monitors instruction and assessment practices
* Assists staff in developing required student growth plans and identifying valid, reliable sources of evidence of effectiveness
