Learning Support Teacher

Qualifications and Abilities:
  • A valid Nova Scotia Teaching Certificate.
  • M Ed. In Special Education; M Ed in Inclusive Education; or Diploma in Special Education preferred.
  • Required courses include:
    Masters Ed. Course Principle of Assessment, M Ed. Course in Individual Testing or Assessment for Learning one, M Ed. Course in Programming for Exceptionalities or Programming for students with learning differences and Curriculum practices for at risk students.
  • Completion of/or willingness to complete the AVRSB New Resource Teacher Program.
  • The successful applicant will be required to provide a Criminal Record Check and a completed Child Abuse Registry – Request for a Search Form.
Responsibilities:
  • Provide quality instruction within the framework established by the Nova Scotia Department of Education and Early Childhood Development.
  • Demonstrate knowledge through experience and/or training with students with academic and behavioral and/or social emotional needs, including life skills.
  • Demonstrate competency formal, individualized student assessment.
  • Demonstrate excellent oral and written communication skills, including report-writing.
  • Be familiar with a wide range of exceptionalities, learning and behavioral challenges, sensory deficits, and their implications for successful educational programming.
  • Demonstrate the ability to work as a team member in all phases of educational programming.
  • Demonstrate knowledge and understanding of all pertinent provincial and board policies related to student services.
  • Demonstrate skills in communicating and working in collaborative partnerships.
  • Demonstrate the ability to work closely with Educational Assistants to ensure appropriate educational programming.
  • Demonstrate the ability to work in a variety of teaching models (group, individual, co‑teaching, learning centre.
  • Implement strategies, activities, and techniques for promoting student learning based on each student’s prior knowledge, skills, and learning needs.
  • Demonstrate best practices in assessment to determine next steps.
  • Attend and actively engage in meetings and ongoing professional development.
  • Maintain and submit all records in online systems and other communication avenues.
  • The Annapolis Valley Regional Centre for Education will conduct teacher interviews commencing on July 2 for the Open Vacancy hiring round.
  • Interview teams will contact shortlisted applicants between June 18 and up to July 3 to make interview appointments. Applicants must be available to take these phone calls.
  • Interviews will be held at Horton High School, 75 Greenwich Road S., Wolfville, from July 2-3.
  • Successful applicants will be contacted between July 2 – July 3. All shortlisted applicants will be contacted regardless of interview outcome.

Provide 3 professional/supervisory, work‑related references, their email addresses and their phone numbers in your Success Factors application. References must be able to speak to an applicant’s teaching abilities. AVRCE will require referees to provide reference checks prior to noon on June 26.
