The Head Vocational and Behavioral SpEd Teacher at Elma’s high needs behavioral academy will design and deliver instruction to students with behavioral and emotional support needs. This is a full‑time position that requires strong communication, organizational, and problem‑solving skills.
Required Qualifications- Valid Washington State Teaching Certificate with Special Education Endorsement
- WSP/FBI fingerprint background clearance (fee paid by the employee)
- Experience teaching students with high needs autism and behavior in a structured environment
- Experience working with students identified for special education needs services in social adaptive skills and positive behavior management and transitional vocational services
- Ability to plan instructional programs to meet the needs of students with a range of disabilities including sensory impairments, speech and language difficulties, learning difficulties, conditions such as autism, social‑emotional and mental health needs, or a combination of these difficulties
- Knowledge and/or experience in grade levels assigned and common core standards
- Knowledge of current trends in curriculum, instruction, and technology
- Ability to plan instructional programs to meet the needs of diverse learners
- Regular attendance is an essential function of this position
- The safety and health of students and others are essential functions of this position
- Trained in Right Response, Safety Care, or other similar behavioral intervention program
- Knowledge and/or experience with new state assessment requirements
- Experience leading educational teams as a TOSA, PLC lead, or other leadership opportunities available for teachers in the school setting
- Lead, design and deliver instruction for students qualifying for the behavior program and class
- Case manage Individualized Education Plans (IEPs) for students
- Work with vocational and behavioral teams to lead and align instructional design and delivery
- Design instruction for students in the behavior program to meet their academic, social emotional, and behavior needs
- Work with teachers, administrators, and parents to develop and implement behavior plans for students with challenging behaviors
- Provide individual and small group support to students who are struggling with emotional and behavioral issues
- Collaborate and calibrate with Special Services Director regularly on transitional and behavioral programs goals and progress
- Collaborate with the Special Education team to support the social emotional and behavioral needs of students in the building
- Up to date on certification for any physical intervention required to ensure student and staff safety
- Provide crisis intervention and support to students who are experiencing emotional or behavioral crises
- Maintain accurate records of student academic and behavioral progress, in addition to behavior interventions implemented
- Provide training and support to teachers and staff on behavior management strategies
- Ability to direct and support any certificated or paraprofessional staff assigned to support students in the behavioral classroom
- Consistently develop strong relationships with students’ families while diligently informing parents of expectations, positive news, and/or concerns about their children.
- Provide opportunities for parents to be involved in their children’s learning
- Efficiently handle and oversee tasks to ensure that each task is organized, prioritized and effectively managed
