Job Title: Para educator, Elementary Special Education Life Skills Room – One:
One Specialist (One Year 26-27)
The special education para educator, under direct supervision of the teacher, building principal, and director of special education, will assist the teacher in the instructional portion of the school curriculum, help transition the student to and from classes, and attend to both positive and negative behavior. The one‑to‑one para educator will assist with the implementation of Individual Education Plans (IEP), including self‑help, behavior management, and instruction programs.
Instructional methods and materials will be assigned to the para educator by the teacher for use with the student. Safety Care training will be provided as needed. This position is dependent on the enrolled student’s needs, which may include moving from grade to grade with the student and to different buildings within the campus. This position is dependent on student enrollment.

QualificationsThe special education para educator is required to have the equivalent of two years of college or be willing to take and pass a competency test. The assistant will be proficient or willing to be trained in safety care if not currently trained.

Responsibilities- Assist an identified special education student in instructional/vocational activities that have been planned, assigned and organized by the professional staff.
- Assist in teaching academic skills outlined in the IEP through specially designed instruction.
- Assist the teacher with progress monitoring: taking data and collecting data.
- Assist in teaching independent living: leisure time activities, safety, and citizenship.
- Assist the teacher in preparation, maintenance, assembling and returning instructional materials.
- Assist in securing, preparing and operating instructional media and technology as directed by the professional staff.
- Assist in gathering materials relevant for student use as directed by the professional staff and/or the student’s IEP.
- Assist in gathering and organizing data and information as directed.
- Assist in preparation of schedules, charts and rosters for special education students as directed by professional staff.
- Assist in recording grades and related information on the computer as directed by the professional staff.
- Assist in maintaining various files as directed by the professional staff.
- Assist in the preparation, distribution and collection of forms needed by the professional staff.
- Assist in the supervision of special education students in a classroom, learning center, playground and lunchroom, or where applicable. Escort students from class, if necessary.
- Serve as a good role model.
- Reinforce the teacher’s directions, activity or skill to be practiced.
- Practice and drill as directed by the teacher.
- Provide social‑emotional support to student, potentially using restraint and isolation to help student self‑regulate.
- Perform other duties as requested by the classroom teachers or building principals concerning special education students.
- Remain confidential regarding school matters such as paperwork, student conduct and family matters.
Working area will be in multiple locations depending on the need of the student. Provide assistance in the educational, as well as social‑emotional needs of students. Provide assistance in the preparation and maintenance of educational materials. Provide assistance in the supervision of student including escorting students to and from classes.
