DESCRIPTION: The braillist, under direct supervision of the Special Education Director and the Teacher of the Visually impaired (TVI) will assist in the instructional portion of the school day. In this position, you will work with preschool to twelfth grade students. The braillist is responsible for transcribing educational materials for students who are blind and visually impaired into alternate formats. In addition, this position provides support to the district’s Program for Students with Visual Impairment, including students who are visually impaired and teachers certified to work with students with impairments (TVI), work with students in small groups or on a one‑to‑one basis and supervise when needed during the regular school day.

This unrepresented position is contingent upon the number of visually impaired students enrolled in the district. This is a seven (7) hour per day position.

SALARY RANGE: $32 per hour

QUALIFICATIONS
  • High School diploma or equivalency
  • Current certification in Unified English Braille
Desired Qualifications
  • General knowledge of how to work with a student with a visual impairment
  • Nemeth Braille Code
  • Science Braille Code
  • Tactile Graphics
  • Braille Embosser
  • Braille Translation Software
  • Word Processing/Six Key Entry
  • General Office Equipment (fax, copier, scanner, etc.)
  • Bilingual in Spanish

Reports to: Special Education Director

Supervises: No direct report

RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Transcribe print materials.
  • Produce adaptive instructional materials for students with visual impairments in accordance to the TVI’s specifications. Embosses, re‑edits, and binds materials using various methods.
  • Creates tactile graphics of maps, charts, pictures, routes, and other tactile displays using various tools, materials, and machines.
  • Demonstrates knowledge and skills of human guide and instructional technology tools used by students with visual impairments, including low vision devices, abacus, screen readers, etc.
  • Manages and maintains braille, large print, and instructional material for students with visual impairments.
  • Perform other appropriate duties as assigned, requested or needed by the supervisor.
  • Implements lessons and activities with students with visual impairments in classrooms, one‑on‑one, and/or small groups under the direction and supervision of a TVI.
  • Be able to work as a professional in a collaborative team.
  • Create a positive rapport with students and fellow staff members.
WORKING CONDITIONS

Working area will be in the elementary or secondary classrooms and other locations depending on the needs of the students. Provide assistance in the educational needs of students. Provide assistance in the preparation and maintenance of educational materials. Provide assistance in the supervision of students including escorting students to and from classes. Assignment will be determined on the needs of the students and is subject to change when the needs of the students change.
