Job Description

We are recruiting for a Special Education Para educator to serve Hilltop Middle School in the Ocean Beach School District for the 2026-27 school year. The position is 32.5 hours per week, school year schedule. Start date will be August 2026.

General Responsibilities

Reporting directly to the Special Education Teacher, the Special Education Para educator is responsible for supporting and assisting students with disabilities in various school settings. The Special Education Para educator, consistent with the individual education plan (IEP) or individual family service plan (IFSP), assists the Special Education Teacher with lesson plan preparation; one‑on‑one and small group instruction; classroom management; student observation and assessment;

and communication with parents and staff.

Salary

The full salary range for this position is $21.27 – $26.31 per hour. Offers are made at the beginning of the range.

Regular Attendance

Regular attendance is required. This role relies on regular and reliable attendance to ensure consistency for our students and to support a positive, productive learning environment.

Essential Functions
  • Assist the Special Education Teacher, consistent with IEP or IFSP goals, in lesson plan preparation; one‑on‑one & small group instruction; classroom management; student observation & assessment; and communication with parents and staff in a variety of school settings.
  • Supervise students.
  • Collect data and report student progress.
  • Maintain accurate data collection records.
  • Communicate with staff and parents as instructed by the Special Education Teacher.
  • Provide positive behavior management support, consistent with the IEP or IFSP.
  • Attend to the physical needs of students—including moving and positioning students & assisting with personal hygiene needs.
  • Participate in staff meetings, in‑service programs, workshops and seminars.
  • Participate as a member of the education team. May attend parent conferences.
  • Maintain regular attendance to carry out the duties and responsibilities of the position.
  • Other duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications
  • At least 18 years of age.
  • High school diploma or GED.
  • Must meet one of the following educational requirements:
  • Associate’s Degree OR 48 sem./72 quarter credits from an accredited college or university; OR Passing score of 455 on the Para Pro Assessment; OR Passing score of 220 on the Pearson Paraprofessional Assessment; OR 65% on The Master Teacher, Inc. Para educator Online Training Program.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience in a special education classroom setting.
  • Knowledge of programs and services for students with disabilities.
Working Conditions

Classroom setting; may move from classroom to classroom to provide services.

Provide assistance and attend to the physical needs of students including moving and positioning students and assisting with personal hygiene needs, including but not limited to tube feeding, catheterization, changing diapers, toileting.

Sit, stand, and stoop to attend to student's needs & to provide instruction.

Regular attendance during assigned work schedule.

Travel within ESD 112 region for meetings and trainings.
