Position: Substitute Bus Assistant 2026-2027
Location: Mead

Starting Date: Immediately

Job Summary

The Supervision Para‑Educator (Substitute Bus Assistant) role ensures student safety by supervising and facilitating activities, including assisting with special transportation needs of preschool, elementary, and secondary students on school bus rides to and from school.

Essential Functions
  • Follow and support building and department procedures.
  • Encourage and model expected behavior.
  • Anticipate problem behaviors to minimize and deescalate aggressive behavior of students who are acting out.
  • Circulate within an assigned supervision area and facilitate and direct activities positively.
  • Assist in maintaining safety, behavior, decorum, and order in common areas (cafeteria, playground, corridors, study halls, gymnasium, auditorium, locker rooms, parking lots, crosswalks, detention rooms, and school buses).
  • Work cooperatively and respectfully with all members of the school community.
  • Demonstrate sensitivity and respect for diversity among all members of the school/department or district community.
  • Keep documentation and maintain organized records on a daily basis.
  • Participate in training courses to enhance skills.
  • Perform basic computer skills such as word processing and email.
  • Report to assigned duty areas promptly and reliably.
  • Remain flexible to changes in assignments or situations.
  • Work independently with minimal supervision.
  • Provide first aid in case of illness and/or injury and report accidents to the building office.
  • Perform other duties as directed by the supervisor.
Minimum Qualifications

Education/Training

  • High school diploma or willingness to obtain an equivalent.
  • Current first aid/CPR certification or willingness to obtain promptly.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills with all staff and students.
  • Ability to work with students in a warm and confident manner.
  • Knowledge of student safety rules and procedures.
  • Ability to maintain strict confidentiality.
Work Environment
  • Physical ability to kneel, bend, and stand, and lift up to 50 lbs.
  • May work outdoors in inclement weather.
  • May be required to patrol entire campus on foot, including climbing stairs.
  • Ability to maintain strict confidentiality.
Physical Demands

The employee will exert up to 50 pounds of force occasionally while carrying, pushing, and/or pulling objects. The employee may lift and move up to 50 lbs unassisted, and may lift more than 50 lbs with assistance. The job requires standing, walking, sitting, stooping, kneeling, crouching, and fine finger dexterity. Exposure to risk of injury and ordinary infectious diseases is possible.

Salary and Benefits

Salary:
Minimum $19.13 – Maximum $19.13 per hour.

Substitutes accrue 1 hour of sick leave for every 40 hours worked. Substitutes who work 630 hours become benefit eligible for the remainder of the school year.
