JOB TITLE:
Secondary Band and Choir Teacher

This position will commence with the 2026–2027 school year, beginning in August 2026

QUALIFICATIONS: Washington state teaching certification with required endorsement; coursework and/or experience appropriate to assignment, vocational certification when appropriate; judgment and discretion befitting an educator. Successfully pass background check, including criminal history.

  • Bachelor's degree in Music Education or a related field.
  • Valid Washington State teaching certification with an endorsement in Music Education or related area.
  • Previous teaching experience in band, choir, or a related subject at the secondary level is preferred.
  • Knowledge of Washington State Music standards and curriculum development.
  • Strong organizational, communication, and interpersonal skills.
  • Bilingual Preferred (English/Spanish)
  • Ability to work effectively with diverse student populations and create an inclusive learning environment.
  • Judgment and discretion befitting an educator.

REPORTS TO: Building principal and district superintendent.

JOB GOAL: To provide for and carry out an instructional program as defined by the school district and the state.

SUPERVISES: Students and para educators as assigned.

Performance Responsibilities
  • Develop and implement engaging lesson plans for band and choir courses that align with Washington State Music standards.
  • Facilitate student growth by maintaining high standards of classroom behavior by implementing strategies and practices that align with the school-wide behavior expectations (Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports).
  • Collaborate with team members in Professional Learning Communities (PLCs) to foster growth, share best practices, and continuously improve instructional strategies, ensuring alignment with curriculum standards and enhancing student learning experiences.
  • Support multilingual learners by implementing differentiated instructional strategies, collaborating with multilingual learners (ML) specialists, and using culturally responsive teaching methods to enhance language acquisition and academic achievement for all students.
  • Utilize a variety of instructional strategies and resources to effectively teach and assess students' skills and understanding of the band and choir curriculum.
  • Demonstrate and teach various musical techniques, instruments, and vocal skills, encouraging creativity and musical expression.
  • Instruct students in music theory, music appreciation, and the cultural significance of various music forms.
  • Organize and supervise band and choir rehearsals, ensuring proper use of equipment and adherence to safety protocols.
  • Collaborate with other teachers and staff to promote interdisciplinary learning experiences and support the overall goals of the music program.
  • Maintain accurate records of student attendance, progress, and assessment data in accordance with school and district guidelines.
  • Participate in ongoing professional development to stay current with industry trends, best teaching practices, and state requirements.
  • Communicate effectively with students, parents, and colleagues to support student learning and address any concerns or issues.
  • Foster a positive and inclusive classroom environment that encourages students to actively engage in their learning and respect diverse perspectives.
  • Serve as an advisor to student organizations and clubs related to music, such as the Band Club, Choir Club, or National Music Honor Society.
  • Collaborate with community partners, local musicians, and post-secondary institutions to provide students with real-world experiences and opportunities for musical exploration.
  • Participate in department, school, and district meetings and events as required, contributing to the development and continuous improvement of the music program.
  • Other duties as assigned by building administrator.

LIMITS OF AUTHORITY: Has authority over students and para educators as assigned.

TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT: Contractual agreement in accordance with WAC parameters of state laws and the negotiated agreement, the individual contract, district rules and regulations, and administrative directives.

LENGTH: 180 day work year.

SCHEDULE: 7:30 a.m. to 3:00 p.m.

SALARY AND BENEFITS: As determined by the Board of Directors, state law, local board policy and GEA bargaining agreement.

EVALUATION: At least annually on or before May 1st by the building principal or designee. New or probationary employees are evaluated more frequently.

Position Type: Full-Time

Salary: $58,540 to $113,216 Per Year
