Instructional Para educator

Position hours and pay:
This position is for 7 hours per day at 178 days per year.
* 7 hours per day for 4 days for the first year and 2 days each year following until certification is completed. Position pay: PSE Salary Schedule Level 7 - $ 27.43 per hour (25-26 PSE SALARY SCHEDULE)

* Must successfully complete the Fundamental Course of Studies (FCS) and General Para educator Certificate of the state mandated Para educator Certificate Program per State requirements. Para educator Certificate Program is dependent upon State funding.

In order to be considered for an interview for this instructional para educator position you must meet the following federal minimum employment requirements. Must be 18 years of age; and hold high school diploma or its equivalent; and one of the following: successfully passed the ETS Para Pro test or Pearson Paraprofessional assessment, AA degree or higher, earned seventy-two (72) quarter credits or forty-eight (48) semester credits at an accredited institution of higher education, completion of registered apprenticeship program offered by the Washington State Dept.

General summary:
This position's responsibilities are to provide behavior support to students as directed by the Behavior Analyst and other appropriate personnel. Responsibilities vary with assignment, but typically include tutoring students in prescribed learning activities, providing comprehensive behavioral support to students individually or in small groups, assisting with school and classroom management, and maintaining student records. The Registered/Certified Behavior Technician is itinerant and may be assigned to any student as needed to provide support.

Essential functions:

Depending upon the individual assignment, the Registered/Certified Behavior Technician may perform all or a combination of the following:

  • Instructs students individually or in small groups to affect behavior change; promotes student understanding of materials presented. Works as a team member with behavior analysts, teachers, intervention specialists, school counselors, school psychologists, and other appropriate personnel to establish positive student contacts that develop appropriate and positive behavior modifications enabling students to succeed.
  • Assist with the development and implementation of behavioral IEP goals, Safety Plans, Functional Behavior Assessments, and Behavior Intervention Plans. Implements behavior programs designed to make positive, appropriate changes so the student can learn to be independent without ongoing support from Behavior Support.
  • Assist instructional personnel by participating as a team member in the development and monitoring of comprehensive behavioral objectives, goals, and plans, including Safety Plans, Functional Behavior Assessments (FBA), and Behavior Intervention Plans (BIP). Assist the certificated staff member in the implementation of behavioral and academic services
  • Ensures consistency of behavioral standards by coordinating with appropriate student contacts, monitors physical and emotional changes in students, and reports to appropriate personnel. Collects and records student data to report learning or other difficulties encountered by students to the certificated staff member
  • Monitors students both in and out of the classroom. Assesses crisis situations and defuses situations using conflict resolution and crisis management techniques. Assists the teacher with classroom management; ensures that students stay on task; disciplines students as authorized according to the building discipline procedure.
  • Consults with behavior analyst, teacher, support staff, and administrators to obtain information and advice on prior behavior problems, and provides information as necessary concerning behavioral concerns. Prepare teaching aids as directed by the certificated staff member
  • Ability to work with and supervise students. Reinforces appropriate behaviors and redirects negative behaviors.
  • Ability to work cooperatively with other staff members. Ability to accept direction, responsibility, and work independently.

Other functions:

  • Operate instructional equipment. May duplicate and distribute classroom materials and projects.
  • Maintains physical appearance of instructional area, hallways, and other assigned areas; straightens chairs and tables; puts away materials after use.
