Position: Tenino Elementary (Grades 3-5) School Counselor

Tenino Elementary School School Counselor - 2026/27 SY Position Summary

The School Counselor will serve as a key contributor to the development of students in grades 3-5. This role focuses on implementing a comprehensive school counseling program. The School Counselor supports social-emotional growth and academic achievement while collaborating closely with students, families, staff, and community partners to foster a safe, inclusive, and empowering learning environment.

Required Certifications
  • Valid Washington State Teaching Certificate with appropriate endorsement(s) for level of instruction
  • WSP-FBI background/fingerprint clearance required
Job Expectations and Responsibilities
  • Knowledge of both school counseling and school systems of support PreK-5
  • Experience or ability to work with all students, including students who may be at-risk
  • Ability to initiate programs which aid student development and make referrals to community resources
  • Ability to be flexible; ability to organize time, materials, ability to express ideas clearly; ability to learn new ideas and skills; ability and willingness to develop favorable relationships with students; and willingness to model behavior deemed appropriate by the school district and community
  • Demonstrated ability to relate in a positive way with the students, staff, parents, and the community, skill in human relations which demonstrate sensitivity to needs and concerns of others
  • Knowledge of research-based strategies and interventions
  • Ability to work cooperatively with staff, administration & support personnel in a team approach to help students be successful in school
  • Ability to collaborate and develop positive behavior interventions in collaboration with the principal and building student support team
  • Attend initial training and maintain certification in district identified interventions
  • Be willing to meet with families at school.
  • Ability to maintain high ethical standards throughout all duties
  • Demonstrated proficiency in writing and oral communication skills
  • Must be able to perform the essential functions of the job with or without reasonable accommodation
  • Provide individual and/or group instruction in social emotional/behavioral skill building
  • Plan, coordinate and implement the building guidance program and work cooperatively with other staff to create a healthy learning environment
  • Provide assistance to staff and students within the classroom and through school activities
  • Work together with and consult with teachers and administrators concerning the educational development of students
  • Consult with parents in the areas of educational and personal development of their children
  • Help implement referral procedures appropriate to situations
  • Help with the orientation of students involved in grade level movement, transfer, entry and withdrawal
  • Initiate and maintain adequate student and office records in meeting the responsibilities of the position
Physical Requirements
  • Employees must have the ability to sit and stand for extended periods of time.
  • Physical ability to lift 25 pounds to shoulder height.
  • Ability to bend, stoop, climb stairs, and reach overhead.
  • Ability to effectively manage student transition to a variety of locations (e.g. P.E., recess, buses and lunch) throughout the day.
