Overview Of Position
The job of Special Education Assistant/ISE-203 is to assist in the supervision, care, and instruction of special needs students in the regular classroom or in a self‑contained classroom; to help implement plans for instruction; to monitor student behavior during non‑classroom time; to provide information to appropriate school personnel; and to attend IEP meetings.
Essential Functions- Adapt classroom activities, assignments, and/or materials under the direction of the teacher to provide all special education students with opportunities to participate in classroom activities.
- Administer tests, homework, grades, papers, folders, and other materials to assist the teacher in evaluating students’ progress and organizing individual student needs.
- Administer first aid and medical assistance as required to provide appropriate care for injured children.
- Assist students with personal care needs arising from medical conditions or physical limitations to allow them to function in the school environment.
- Attend meetings and in‑service presentations (first aid, CPR, emergency procedures, etc.) to acquire or convey information related to job functions.
- Confere with special education and/or mainstream teachers regularly to assist in evaluating student progress and implementing IEP objectives.
- Confere with teachers and/or parents (phone calls, e‑mails, parent‑teacher meetings, student progress notebooks) to provide information related to the student’s progress as established in their individual educational program.
- Direct and implement behavioral plans for students with behavior disorders or other conditions to assist in meeting special education students’ needs, protect safety, and provide a consistent environment.
- Instruct students in academic subjects, social skills, daily living skills, and other activities in individual and group settings to reinforce instructional objectives and implement plans for remediation in accordance with the individual educational program goals.
- Maintain instructional materials and student files/records to ensure availability of items and provide reliable information.
- Monitor students during assigned periods across various school environments (rest rooms, playgrounds, hallways, bus loading zones, cafeteria, parking lots) to aid and provide a safe and positive learning environment.
- Perform other related duties as assigned to ensure efficient and effective functioning of the work unit.
Reports to the building principal if assigned through staffing formulas; if based centrally, reports to the assigned Special Education Supervisor.
