Job Description

JOB TITLE:

High School Special Education Resource Room Teacher (GHS)

This position will commence with the 2026–2027 school year, beginning in August 2026

QUALIFICATIONS:

Washington state certification; special education endorsement in teaching area as required;course work and/or experience appropriate to assignment.

Must successfully pass a criminal history check.

REPORTS TO:

Director of Special Education and/or Building principal

SUPERVISES:
Students with disabilities and classroom para educator(s) as assigned.

JOB GOAL:
To provide the instruction and/or accommodation necessary for students with disabilities and receive a free and appropriate education in the school setting.

PERFORMANCE RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Protect confidentiality of records and information gained as part of exercising professional duties and use discretion in sharing such information within legal confines.
  • Maintains forms and procedures required by special education regulations and/or by the Director of Special Education. Assesses students’ academic, social, and/or life skills needs using standardized instruments appropriate curriculum based measures, and/or district-wide assessments.
  • Makes program and accommodation recommendations based on assessment results.
  • Participates in multidisciplinary team meetings.
  • Writes IEPs and mandated paperwork within appropriate timeframe; schedules and attends IEP meetings.
  • Evidence of maintaining a positive, productive learning climate within the classroom as well as with parents and colleagues.
  • Implement an evaluation system to measure student performance.
  • Teaches to objectives; and maintains necessary tracking information to demonstrate student progress toward objectives.
  • Provide consultation and support services to students in large classroom environment.
  • Modify instructional materials and instruction to meet the diverse needs of students and to create an education environment conducive to learning.
  • Remain knowledgeable about the regular curriculum in grades level of students being taught.
  • Demonstrate computer literacy (e.g., familiarity with Google Suite, Qmlativ, IEP management system, etc.).
  • Provides a variety of experiences so that students may develop their skills and understandings through academic, social, and vocational classes.
  • Participates in in-services and staff meetings as required.
  • Engage in professional learning and implement strategies to support the learning needs of multilingual learners.
  • Develop and maintain a positive classroom environment. Establish and maintain collaborative professional relationships with others.
  • Work to establish and maintain open lines of communication with students, parents and colleagues concerning both the academic and behavioral progress of students.
  • Teach students to set and maintain high standards of classroom behavior by developing a written classroom plan that is connected to the school wide behavior expectations (Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports).
  • Participate in district-wide improvement efforts/district initiatives.
  • Carries out student discipline in accordance with district policy, disciplinary guidelines, and the student rights and responsibility code.
  • Is responsible for updating inventories and for turning in the end-of-year reports.
  • Communicates and cooperates with professional peers and administration. Works within integrated settings when appropriate.
  • Performs such other duties as may be required of the position or assigned by the administration to fulfill the mission and roll of the school and community.
  • Be able to perform job tasks as follows:
    • Lift and carry 10-50 pounds frequently.
    • Assist with lifting over 50 lbs. frequently
    • Provide care to clients in toileting
    • Requires transferring weight skills.
    • Use restraint techniques with clients when necessary.
    • Be able to bend, kneel, squat, twist, turn and extend arm use involving various weights frequently.
    • Be on feet the majority of the work shift.
    • Must be able to meet deadlines with severe time constraints.
    Terms and Conditions

    LIMIT OF AUTHORITY:
    Has authority over students and classroom para educator(s) as assigned.

    TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT:
    Contractual agreement in accordance with WAC parameters of state laws and negotiated agreement, the individual contract, district rules and regulations, and administrative directives.

    LENGTH: 180 day work year

    SCHEDULE:

    7:30am-3:00pm

    SALARY AND BENEFITS:
    As determined by the Board of Directors, state law, local board policy, and the collective bargaining agreement.

    EVALUATION:
    At least annually on/before May 1st by the building principal and/or the Director of Special Education. New or probationary employees are evaluated more often as per state law, WAC’s, GEA contract, and district policy.
