Life Skills Paraprofessional

Position Overview

The Life Skills Paraprofessional supports students with significant cognitive, adaptive, and/or behavioral needs in a specialized educational setting. Under the guidance of certificated staff, this role assists in delivering individualized and small‑group instruction, focusing on functional academics, daily living skills, and social‑emotional development. The goal is to promote student independence and success both in the classroom and the broader school environment.

Key Responsibilities
  • Instructional Support:
    • Assist in implementing Individualized Education Programs (IEPs) by providing targeted support in areas such as communication, self‑help, and academic skills.
    • Work with students individually or in small groups to reinforce learning objectives.
    • Utilize assistive technology and adaptive materials to facilitate student engagement and learning.
  • Behavioral and Social Support:
    • Implement behavior intervention plans and support positive behavior development.
    • Promote social skills and appropriate peer interactions within the classroom and during school activities.
    • Monitor and document student progress, adjusting support strategies as needed.
  • Health and Safety Assistance:
    • Provide personal care assistance, including feeding, toileting, diapering, and hygiene support.
    • Administer first aid and assist with medical needs as directed by health care professionals.
    • Ensure student safety during transitions, recess, and other school activities.
  • Collaboration and Communication:
    • Work closely with teachers, therapists, and other staff to coordinate and implement educational plans.
    • Participate in team meetings and professional development opportunities.
    • Maintain confidentiality and adhere to district policies regarding student information.
  • Other duties as assigned by SPED Director and/or principal.
Qualifications
  • Education and Experience:
    • High school diploma or equivalent required.
    • Completion of at least 72 quarter credits or 48 semester credits at the 100 level or higher from an accredited institution, or an Associate’s degree, or passage of the Washington State Para educator Assessment.
  • Certifications:
    • Current First Aid and CPR certification, or willingness to obtain.
    • Completion of the Para educator Fundamental Course of Study within the first year of employment.
  • Skills and Abilities:
    • Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
    • Ability to work effectively as part of a team.
    • Patience, flexibility, and a positive attitude toward students with diverse needs.
    • Basic proficiency with technology and willingness to learn new tools.
Working Conditions
  • Work is performed in a classroom setting and may include outdoor supervision during recess and other activities.
  • Physical requirements include the ability to lift and assist students, as well as to perform tasks that may require bending, kneeling, and standing for extended periods.
  • Exposure to student illnesses and behaviors requiring de‑escalation techniques may occur.
