ECEAP – Assistant Teacher

Purpose Statement

The Teacher Assistant is responsible for assisting the Teacher in the implementation of the education plan into daily classroom operations and parent involvement activities. In the absence of the Teacher, the Teacher Assistant is responsible for assuming responsibility for classroom management and the education plan. The Teacher Assistant is responsible for pro-active participation in center jobs identified to support the overall operations of the center.

This job reports to ECEAP Coordinator.

Essential Functions

  • Assume responsibility for classroom in Teacher's absence.
  • Implement classroom management practices to ensure safety and supervision of children at all times, provide positive guidance strategies, and provide a safe and appropriate learning environment.
  • Assist Teacher in observation, assessment, and development of individual learning plans for children, including entering child observation data into assessment system.
  • Participate and contribute to development of classroom goals in conjunction with Early Childhood Services Coordinator, Early Childhood Center Manager, Teacher and families.
  • Participate in Home Visits and Family Conferences as requested.
  • Participate in planning a developmentally appropriate curriculum and in implementing activities, including contributing to the development of weekly curriculum plans.
  • Assist Teacher by working with children in small groups and large groups.
  • Assist in the supervision of daily activities of children during indoor and outdoor play periods
  • Assist Teacher in planning, preparation, set-up and clean-up of classroom.
  • Assist with bus transportation as needed.
  • Participate in preparing and maintaining attendance records, head counts, meal count, child observation notes, health and safety checks, and other required documentation.
  • Encourage parents and community volunteers to take an active part in the classroom and program.
  • Encourage parent involvement by sharing information about program activities, verbally and through newsletters and other written communication, and through positive interactions.
  • Support Family Service Worker in planning and implementing parent involvement and child/family activities, including center committee meetings and other parent groups.
  • Work in partnership with Teacher, Family Service Worker, and other site staff to support site functioning and implement program goals.
  • Participate in local service team meetings including family reviews, staffings, and IEP/IFSP meetings as requested.
  • Contribute to annual revision of work plans.

Other Functions

  • Performs other related duties as assigned for the purpose of ensuring the efficient and effective functioning of the work unit.

  • Develop and maintain accurate records in accordance with program policies and procedures.
  • Promote and follow current program health and safety practices.
  • Participate in development and implementation of center and program's codes of cooperation.
  • Have knowledge of and be responsible for information contained in the program calendar and personal work schedule.

Program

  • Carry out goals, policies and activities designed to implement program objectives and performance standards.
  • Maintain clear communication with program/center staff members to ensure overall improvement and development.
  • Set goals and develop ways to improve program quality.
  • Identify resources to meet the needs of the families.
  • Participate in the conduct of community needs assessments.
  • Serve as liaison between families, center, community, and grantee administration.
  • Be an active participant on a program committee.
  • Participate in program evaluation and planning process.
  • Generate and document in-kind contributions.
  • All staff will be required to participate in program activities outside of their normal work hours and scheduled work days.

Professional Development

  • Participate in pre- and in-service training.
  • Develop and maintain positive attitudes toward personal development and on-going training.
  • Develop an individual performance/growth plan (with assistance from peers and supervisor).
  • Document trainings and other professional development activities in professional portfolio.
