Purpose Statement

The job of Teacher Special Education was established for the purpose of providing support to the instructional process by serving as a teacher with specific responsibility for developing special education students' success in academics, interpersonal skills and activities of daily living; supervising students within the classroom and other assigned areas; developing lesson plans and delivering group and individual student instruction within established curriculum guidelines;

collaborating with other teachers, other professional staff, and administrators in addressing instructional and/or classroom issues; and responding to a wide range of inquiries from students’ parents or guardians regarding instructional programs and student progress.

This job reports to Principal.

Essential Functions
  • Administers developmental testing programs, district assessments and/or state tests for the purpose of assessing student competency levels and/or developing individual learning plans.
  • Administers first aid and assistance to medically fragile children under supervision for the purpose of providing appropriate care.
  • Advises parents and/or legal guardians of student progress for the purpose of communicating expectations; student’s achievements; developing methods for improvement.
  • Assesses student progress towards objectives, expectations and/or goals for the purpose of providing feedback to students, parents and administration.
  • Collaborates with professional learning communities and other school personnel for the purpose of improving student outcomes and supporting IEP goals.
  • Counsels students for the purpose of improving performance and wellbeing.
  • Demonstrates methods required to perform classroom and subject-specific assignments.
  • Differentiates classroom work to address individualized learning plans within established lesson plans.
  • Directs para professionals, volunteers and/or student workers for the purpose of supporting classroom programs.
  • Instructs students to improve academic, interpersonal, and daily living skills.
  • Maintains confidential and non-confidential records (e.g., IEPs, SEAs) for mandated requirements.
  • Manages student behavior for the purpose of providing a safe and optimal learning environment.
  • Monitors students in various educational environments for safety and learning.
  • Participates in meetings (e.g., SAP, IEP, PLC) for information gathering and decision making.
  • Prepares written materials (e.g., IEPs, grades, attendance, records) for documenting progress and compliance.
  • Responds to emergencies and inquiries to resolve issues and provide information.
  • Schedules students with para professionals and other staff for academic and therapeutic instruction to meet IEP goals.
  • Supports classroom teachers in implementing curriculum and student plans.
Other Functions
  • Performs other related duties as assigned to ensure efficient functioning of the work unit.

Skills, knowledge, and abilities required include applying assessment instruments, operating standard office equipment, software use, and maintaining accurate records.
