Position: Science Teacher (Long-Term Substitute)

Long-Term Substitute Teacher

The La Center School District is seeking an innovative, dynamic long-term substitute teacher to serve students at La Center Middle School. The successful candidate will demonstrate a thorough knowledge of current trends in education including curriculum and instructional practices, subject matter content, and the effective use of data to modify instruction and improve student learning. The mission of the La Center School District is to create a supportive learning environment that empowers students to reach their fullest potential.

The successful candidate will support the district mission by developing confident and self-reliant lifelong learners in the 6th & 8th Grade Science classrooms at La Center Middle School. Attendance at professional development meetings is required. The dates of the assignment are August 27 - December 1, 2026 and are subject to change based on the incumbent's return from leave and the needs of the district.

The successful candidate must be fingerprinted. Employment is contingent upon a satisfactory background check and clearance by the Washington State Patrol and the Federal Bureau of Investigation.

Essential Functions:
  • Plan and implement a program of study to follow State and District standards that meet the individual needs and abilities of students by providing effective differentiated instruction using research-based practices
  • Annually establish student growth goals and develop strategies to ensure student growth
  • Implement instructional methods and materials that are identified best practices for achieving stated objectives for instruction and student success, including the use of technology
  • Guide the learning process toward the achievement of student outcomes
  • Collaborate with other staff to cooperatively plan, develop, and implement a course of instruction designed to meet the needs of students in all curriculum areas
  • Educate special needs students within the regular classroom environment in collaboration with other staff
  • Create a classroom environment that is safe and conducive to learning for all students
  • Collaborate with other staff to cooperatively develop effective, positive approaches for improving student behavior
  • Fulfill District, State and Federal testing requirements
  • Provide positive supports and guidance to a diverse population
  • Effectively manage student behavior
  • Assess students' academic learning and/or skills for the purpose of providing feedback to students, parents and administration regarding student progress, expectations, goals, etc.
  • Advise families of student progress for the purpose of supporting teacher's expectations, developing methods for improvement and/or reinforcing classroom goals
  • Maintain accurate, complete, confidential and timely records as required by law, District policy, and administrative regulations including attendance, IEP information, progress reports, cumulative records, and classroom inventory
  • Collaborate with school personnel and parents for the purpose of improving the quality of student performance, developing solutions and planning curriculum
  • Demonstrate a professional and positive attitude when carrying out responsibilities as a faculty member
  • Participate in building programs, including assemblies, contests, and other student activities
  • Contribute to the collaborative effort of all staff to meet individual student needs through participation in staff meetings, in-service programs, workshops, and seminars
  • Participate in activities beyond the regularly scheduled workday, as needed
  • Communicate effectively with students, parents, staff, and community partners
  • Attend required trainings and professional development opportunities to broaden expertise in the field of teaching
  • Provide a safe learning environment for all students
  • Regular attendance to carry out the duties and responsibilities of the position
  • Perform other related duties as assigned
Required Qualifications:
  • Possess or immediately qualify for a Washington State teaching certificate with an endorsement appropriate to teach at the middle school level (e.g., K-8 or Elementary Education)
  • Thorough knowledge of current trends in curriculum and instructional practices, subject-matter content, and data-driven decision-making
  • Previous teaching experience

  • Demonstrated ability to successfully employ effective teaching methods
  • Willingness and ability to attend ongoing professional development activities
  • Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing with a diverse population of staff, students, families, and community members while maintaining a calm, professional demeanor and supporting an atmosphere of warmth, cooperation and service to others
  • Demonstrated ability to treat all staff, students, parents, and community members with dignity
  • Demonstrated ability to establish and maintain positive relationships with students and staff
  • Strong self-initiative with an ability to work independently with minimal supervision
