Job Summary

The Para educator works under the direct supervision of certificated staff to support the supervision, instruction, safety, and individual needs of students receiving special education services. This position assists with implementing Individualized Education Program (IEP) accommodations, Specially Designed Instruction (SDI), academic and behavioral supports, and personal care needs to promote student success in both special education and general education settings.

The Para educator may support individual students, small groups, or classrooms based on student and program needs. This position may also be expected to support student transportation during the AM and/or PM route as assigned.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities
  • Assist teachers and special education staff in implementing student IEP accommodations, modifications, and Specially Designed Instruction (SDI).
  • Provide individual and small-group instructional support in special education and general education settings.
  • Support students with a variety of disabilities, academic needs, behavioral needs, and functional needs.
  • Monitor students in classrooms, playgrounds, common areas, and other school settings to maintain a safe and positive learning environment.
  • Collect and document data related to student IEP goals, academic progress, behavior, and other identified areas.
  • Assist teachers and case managers with progress monitoring and information used to evaluate student growth.
  • Communicate regularly with special education and general education teachers regarding student needs, progress, successes, and areas of concern.
  • Administer assessments or assist with testing as directed by certificated staff.
  • Assist with basic clerical functions, including copying, preparing instructional materials, organizing data, and maintaining student materials.
  • Supervise students during recess, lunch, arrival, dismissal, transportation, and other assigned periods.
  • Participate in meetings, training, PLCs, and professional development as requested by the Case Manager or Administration.
  • Collaborate with teachers, para educators, specialists, administrators, and other staff to support student success.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned to support students and school programs.
Student Health, Safety, and Personal Care

Depending on student needs and assignment, the Para educator may be required to:

  • Provide personal care assistance, including toileting/changing, dressing, feeding, and mobility support.
  • Assist with G-Tube feeding/plunging procedures following required training and established student health plans.
  • Participate in a two-person lift of students weighing more than 50 pounds when required. Training on appropriate lifting and safety procedures will be provided.
  • Assist students with positioning, mobility, transitions, and access throughout the school environment.
  • Monitor and support students' physical comfort, dignity, health, and safety throughout the school day.
  • Follow student-specific health, safety, behavior, and emergency plans as trained and directed.
Skills, Knowledge, and Abilities

The successful candidate must be able to:

  • Establish positive, supportive, and professional relationships with students and staff.
  • Work effectively with students with varied disabilities, behaviors, developmental levels, and academic needs.
  • Follow instructional plans and differentiate support based on individual student needs and teacher direction.
  • Understand basic principles of child development and instructional practices.
  • Learn and implement instructional, behavioral, and support strategies across a variety of settings.
  • Follow oral and written instructions and consistently implement established student plans.
  • Maintain schedules, meet deadlines, and adapt to changing student and program needs.
  • Read, understand, and follow applicable rules, procedures, policies, IEPs, and student support plans.
  • Maintain accurate student data and documentation.
  • Perform basic arithmetic calculations and clerical functions and operate standard school/office equipment.
  • Communicate effectively in verbal and written English using appropriate grammar, punctuation, and spelling.
  • Maintain confidentiality regarding student records, educational information, behavior, health information, and family information.
  • Demonstrate flexibility and respond professionally and positively to changes in assignments, schedules, and student needs.
Qualifications
  • Successful criminal history background check and fingerprint clearance.
  • Strong communication, collaboration, and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability and willingness to work with students with diverse academic, behavioral, physical, and developmental needs.
