Job Summary :
Under the direction and supervision of the building principal, the job of Para Educator – Behavior Support was established for the purpose of assisting in the supervision, care, instruction, and behavioral support of students with high behavioral needs in the regular classroom or in a self-contained classroom.

Essential Job Functions: This list of essential job functions is not exhaustive and may be supplemented as necessary. Depending upon individual assignment, the employee may perform all or a combination of several of the following duties:

• Adapts classroom activities, assignments, and/or materials under the direction of the classroom teacher for the purpose of providing an opportunity for all students to participate in classroom activities.
• Assists in supervising, supporting, and educating students with significant behavioral, emotional, social, and/or communication needs for the purpose of promoting student safety, engagement, and access to instruction.
• Works directly with students who demonstrate challenging, disruptive, aggressive, unsafe, or otherwise maladaptive behaviors for the purpose of helping students develop and use more appropriate replacement behaviors.
• Builds positive, supportive relationships with students while maintaining appropriate professional boundaries for the purpose of establishing trust, increasing student engagement, and supporting positive behavioral change.
• Implements behavior support strategies, interventions, reinforcement systems, visual supports, prompting, redirection, and other techniques as directed by the classroom teacher, special education teacher, behavior specialist, or IEP team.
• Supports students in identifying and utilizing appropriate coping strategies, calming techniques, self-regulation skills, communication strategies, and replacement behaviors for the purpose of reducing challenging behaviors and increasing independence.
• Recognizes potential triggers, antecedents, and patterns associated with student behavior and communicates relevant observations to the appropriate teacher or support staff for the purpose of assisting in the development and implementation of effective behavioral supports.
• Responds to challenging and escalating behaviors in a calm, consistent, and professional manner using approved de-escalation and behavior management strategies for the purpose of maintaining safety and helping students return to a state in which they are able to participate in learning.
• Assists students in recovering and re-engaging following behavioral incidents for the purpose of helping students process the event, practice appropriate responses, and successfully return to instruction.
• Provides positive reinforcement and recognition of appropriate behavior for the purpose of increasing positive behaviors, student independence, classroom participation, and successful interactions with peers and adults.
• Supports students in developing appropriate social skills, peer interactions, conflict-resolution skills, communication skills, and problem-solving skills for the purpose of increasing successful participation in the school environment.
• Implements individualized behavior support plans and interventions as directed by the IEP team or other qualified school personnel for the purpose of maintaining consistency and supporting identified behavioral goals.
