Position Summary
The Metallurgist provides technical support for products and manufacturing processes, prepares metallurgical reports, approves quality of products produced, develops supplier specifications, and ensures compliance with customer, company, and industry standards. This role contributes to product development efforts, leads continuous improvement projects, and performs root cause and corrective actions of product failures. The Metallurgist collaborates with Quality Systems, Technical Services, Operations, Product Development, and Sales personnel.
PrimaryDuties & Responsibilities
- Provide metallurgical support for purchase and evaluation of steel strip, including vendor evaluation, qualification, claim investigation, process failure, and supplier interface for continuous improvement.
- Ensure product quality and compliance with internal, customer, and industry specifications.
- Supervise and provide metallurgical support for lab testing and coordinate third‑party tests as needed.
- Identify and contribute to continuous improvement projects.
- Develop and maintain quality management systems, procedures, and equipment to meet customer specifications and company quality requirements.
- Support customer claims and concerns by providing metallurgical expertise.
- Use statistical process control, analyze processing parameters and product test results to assess and improve production capabilities and product tolerances.
- Metal Vendor Management:
Specification review to trial in less than 45 days; vendor claims submitted within 45 days; OTMD/EBIT/COPQ metrics. - Technical Review of Orders:
Orders reviewed in less than 24 hours; OTMD compliance. - Root Cause Analysis and Corrective Actions:
Completed within 30 days; supports claims reduction and prime yield improvements.
- Approve/reject metal vendor specifications.
- Review and approve/reject sales order entries.
- Disposition held or defective product.
- Determine if products meet customer or industry specifications.
- Approve process changes during production.
- Authorize acquisition of lab supplies and equipment.
Minimum:
- Bachelor’s Degree in Metallurgy, Metallurgical Engineering, Materials Engineering, or equivalent.
- 5+ years of experience in metals manufacturing, fabrication, or analysis.
- Proficiency with Excel and/or process control software.
Preferred:
- Previous experience in the steel industry.
- Continuous improvement project leadership experience.
- Quality Management Systems development experience.
- SAP experience.
- Results‑oriented with a proven track record of meeting deadlines.
- Effective cross‑functional collaboration and industry engagement.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills.
- Highly organized, able to manage multiple tasks with attention to detail.
- Commitment to continuous process improvement.
- Ability to review and interpret technical data.
- Commitment to safe work practices.
