School Description

Rumsey Hall School is a prestigious K-9 boarding and day school located in Washington, Connecticut. This full-time position offers a unique opportunity to be part of a close-knit, mission-driven boarding school community dedicated to the growth and wellbeing of every student.

Position

The duties and responsibilities of the Controller include:

  • Manage the month-end close process, including preparing, posting, and reviewing journal entries, reconciling the general ledger, and managing the chart of accounts. Prepare monthly Cash Flow summaries and financial reports for Board meetings in support of the CFO.
  • Oversee accounts payable, bank reconciliations, deposits, cash receipts, and petty cash.
  • Serve as the school's primary liaison with the external audit firm; own the preparation of audit materials, final journal entries, and reconciliation to Rumsey's trial balance. Monitor restricted gifts and expenses and prepare year-end journal entries and reports for audit. Coordinate all reports required for annual Form 990/990T tax filings.
  • Reconcile tuition aging monthly and prepare Billing Management journal entries for export. Review aging reports with the Student Billing Coordinator and communicate with parents regarding student spending accounts and billing matters. Assist with tuition refund insurance withdrawal claims and calculate enrollment contract figures for mid-year start dates.
  • Reconcile donations bi-weekly with the Advancement Office to ensure Financial Edge and Raisers Edge are aligned.
  • Submit student lists for health, accident, and extended health insurance enrollment. Prepare contract packets for laundry, accident, tuition refund, and student health insurance; update the explanation of fees.
  • Support miscellaneous projects as requested by the CFO.
Required Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree in Accounting or Finance, with a minimum of 7–10 years of progressive accounting experience, preferably in a school or nonprofit setting.
  • Demonstrated ability to own the full accounting cycle and produce financial statements independently, with proficiency in Microsoft Excel, Word, and Google Docs.
  • Excellent interpersonal, verbal, and written communication skills, with the ability to work effectively with senior leadership, parents, and colleagues across departments.
  • Strong organizational skills with the ability to prioritize, meet deadlines, work both independently and collaboratively, and maintain strict confidentiality.
  • Experience with the Blackbaud Accounting system (Financial Edge).
Compensation and Benefits
  • Salary range of $85,000–$110,000 annually, commensurate with experience and qualifications.
  • Health insurance coverage (medical) for the employee and eligible dependents.
