POSITION SUMMARY:
Provides emergency aid, security and protection to the citizens of Benton County by patrolling residential and commercial property, responding to requests for information and assistance, investigating criminal activity, and enforcing laws and regulations.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
The following duties are essential for this position. However, they are not to be construed as exclusive or all-inclusive. To be successful in this position, an individual must be able to perform each duty satisfactorily. Other duties may also be required or assigned.
* Patrols an assigned area to aid in preventing crime and to enforce state and local laws and regulations. Responds to a wide variety of calls and complaints including burglaries, homicides, accidents, and other misdemeanors and felonies.
* Observes, reports, and acts on conditions conducive to crime and danger such as checking buildings for security, stopping warning city traffic violators, and checking suspicious persons and vehicles.
* Enforces traffic laws, reports traffic hazards, and directs traffic flow when necessary.
* Responds to radio calls, determines nature of call, and investigates the circumstances. Performs necessary action such as making arrests and transporting prisoners.
* Provides assistance to the public in emergency and non emergency situations. Administers first aid and requests medical service. Provides general information to the public on laws and ordinances. Assists individuals with complaints and inquiries or makes referrals to the appropriate authority or agency.
* Prepares a variety of records and reports regarding property impounded, accidents, offenses, and damage to property. Prepares and maintains activity logs and other related or similar types of information as a personal reference record of incidents and details.
* Performs investigative assignments; conducts interviews of victims, witnesses, and suspects; photographs crime scene; collects and documents evidence; may arrest suspects.
* Participates in crime prevention efforts by giving lecture and maintaining a high degree of visibility. Makes presentations to civic organizations to encourage public support for department programs.
* Appears in court and testifies as necessary.
* Maintains proficiency in the use of police related equipment.
* May assist in the training of new officers.
* Performs other related duties as assigned.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:
Knowledge of:
* State and local laws regulations, and ordinances as they pertain to law enforcement duties and responsibilities.
* Computer software consistent for this position.
Skill in:
* Applying problem solving, logic and reasoning to determine solutions, conclusions or approaches to problems.
* The use of law enforcement equipment, vehicles, and firearms.
Ability to:
* Analyze situations and adopt an effective course of action, particularly under psychologically and emotionally stressful conditions.
* Administer first aid.
* Manage high stress and emergency situations with sound judgment and decisiveness.
* Read, write, speak, understand, or communicate in English sufficiently to perform the duties of this position.
* Prepare and maintain accurate and concise records and reports.
* Interpret and implement local policies and procedures; written instructions, general correspondence;
State, and local regulations.
* Use appropriate language, style and methods depending on audience and the purpose of communication.
* Develop and maintain effective working relationships with staff and the public.
* Work the allocated hours of the position, including overtime as required, and respond after hours if needed.
