Position: Corrections Officer (Advanced Entry-Level)
Location: Pioneer

ADVANCED ENTRY OFFICER INCENTIVE

Hiring Bonus of $15,000 for Advanced Entry Corrections Officers hired by the City of Puyallup. The incentive is paid: $5,000 at time of hire, $5,000 at completion of the Corrections Training Officer (CTO) program, and $5,000 at completion of probation.

Vacation Leave Bank – New officers receive 50 hours of vacation leave in their vacation leave bank upon completion of the CTO program.

Sick Leave Bank – New officers receive 50 hours of sick leave in their vacation leave bank upon completion of the CTO program.

Monthly Salary: $6,526.06 – $7,517.64. Additional pay includes shift differential (5.1%), education incentive (4% for Bachelor’s Degree, 2% for Associate Degree), longevity pay starting at 5 years of service, and bilingual pay (1% premium).

Responsibilities
  • Receive prisoners, book them into the jail facility, take photographs and fingerprints, complete records, search prisoners, inventory and secure property, apply physical force if necessary to restrain intoxicated, suicidal, rowdy or abusive prisoners.
  • Direct activities of trustees, prepare and serve meals, clean jail areas, issue clothing, bedding and personal items.
  • Escort visitors and prisoners to and from court hearings, enforce jail standards, maintain records.
  • Coordinate medical services, administer medication under medical instructions.
  • Schedule and supervise recreation opportunities for prisoners.
  • Direct in‑custody court video arraignments, work with defendants, judges, court clerks, attorneys and interpreters.
  • Explain jail procedures, rules and ordinances to prisoners and citizens, seek compliance.
  • Maintain records of citations, write reports (general, supplemental, use‑of‑force, memorandums), log property into the evidence room, testify in trials.
  • Provide armed prisoner transports to destinations.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
Knowledge of
  • Rules and regulations concerning the care and custody of prisoners.
  • Record keeping and report writing.
Ability to
  • Learn and enforce jail standards and department regulations.
  • Qualify with a department‑approved firearm.
  • Safely operate a city vehicle in various weather conditions.
  • Safely restrain and transport prisoners without personal injury.
  • Remember details and accurately maintain records.
  • Complete mandatory, job‑related training requirements.
  • Deal with the public pleasantly and courteously.
  • Communicate effectively in English (speaking, reading, writing).
  • Demonstrate physical strength and agility necessary to perform essential functions.
  • Establish and maintain positive, effective working relationships.
  • Maintain regular, reliable, punctual attendance.
Experience and Education

Advanced Entry‑Level. Must be a graduate of the Washington State Correction Officers or Basic Law Enforcement Academy, or an equally‑equivalent training program, and have up to 24 months of experience as a corrections officer in a city, county or state facility, or at least 2 years of patrol officer experience in a city, county or state agency. If not currently employed as a corrections or police officer, must have no break in service of more than 24 months.

Qualifications
  • United States citizen, lawful permanent resident, or deferred activity for childhood arrivals recipient.
  • Speak, read, and write English.
  • Possession of, or ability to obtain and maintain, a valid Washington State driver’s license during employment.
Physical Requirements

The position requires the physical strength to exert force and/or lift or carry objects weighing up to 70 pounds occasionally; perform tactical self‑defense in the event of an escape attempt; restrain a prisoner; move frequently from location to location; stand or sit for extended periods; reach, push, pull, handle, and grasp with hands, arms, feet, and legs; perform repetitive hand motion with computer data entry;

kneel, crouch, bend, stoop or crawl periodically.
