** General
Summary:
** The Patient Access Specialist always provides excellent customer service to patients and visitors while adhering to strict confidentiality rules. The Patient Access Specialist interacts with the public in a professional, business-like, respectful manner by treating each person as an individual with unique needs. The Patient Access Specialist greets patients/visitors and provides information and general assistance; answers the phone and directs calls for assistance;
assists patient access and flow by efficiently collecting patient demographics information. Enters all patient information and clinical data, as required, in the electronic medical record (EMR), assists with collecting payments for services, and prepares various charge-related documentation. The Patient Access Specialist demonstrates excellent customer service during interactions with employees, managers/supervisors, patients, patient family members, customers, vendors, etc., and works collaboratively with colleagues and departments throughout the organization to provide optimal care services.
Maintains a safe, clean, and organized work environment.
The Patient Access Specialist position will work varied shifts.
Part-time positions are eligible to accrue Paid Time Off and participate in the retirement plan.## Qualifications
** Minimum Education, Training & Experience (includes licenses or certifications):

* Education:
*** High school diploma or GED required.
*
* Experience:
*** One (1) year of experience working in a busy office setting.
* One (1) year of experience working in a medical setting preferred.
** GENERAL
ACCOUNTABILITIES AND
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
*** Answer multi-line phone systems and direct incoming telephone calls.
* Utilize overhead paging system to announce Emergency Codes, Life flight, and Trauma Team Activations.
* Notify designated departments of Trauma Team Activations and accurately document these events in the Trauma Team Activation Log.
* Direct patient flow in the hospital lobby and serve as a receptionist for incoming patients/visitors.
* Periodically check on patients in the waiting room and inform them of wait times.
* Take accurate and timely messages and provide information to other staff as appropriate.
* Maintain current patient status within the EMR; complete a daily census of inpatients.
* Interview patients and accurately document all required patient demographics and insurance information within the electronic medical record (EMR) system for hospital admission, including inpatient and outpatient services.
* Verify insurance coverage at the time of patient visit.
* Process and explain various admission forms, collect patient signatures, and scan this documentation into the EMR.
* Receive/collect, and process daily payments and balances assigned to the cash box.
* Process and mail patient billing statements
* Sort all incoming hospital mail and distribute it appropriately throughout the organization; process and resend return mail as needed.
* Utilize the EDI tool and provider websites to verify benefits, eligibility, and required copayments.
* Assist patients with upfront financial estimates and work with the billing department to ensure patients are aware of financial obligations before services are rendered.
* Assist patients in navigating requests for financial assistance.
* Pre-register scheduled service accounts for Diagnostic Imaging, Surgery Clinic, and outpatient surgeries.
* Follow the self-audit procedure for all registered accounts and correct errors promptly.
* Create and distribute the daily on-call sheet.
* Distribute departmental census and stay-type data.
* Manage visitor sign-in logs.
* Manage digital fax inboxes and distribute incoming faxes appropriately. Fax records when needed.
* Document referral prior authorizations appropriately within the EMR and scan surgical authorization documentation.
* Scan external records received for Med/Surg patients into the EMR.
* Track and report monthly Observation hours.
* Enter supply charge sheets into the EMR.
* Submit daily census reports to designated work groups.
* Process Medical Records Request forms and distribute prepared Medical Records documents to patients.
* May float to the Med/Surg floor for administrative backup in high patient volume.
* Maintain guest room check-in and check-out and alerts EVS for room cleaning.
* Accurately maintain filing
* Perform other duties as assigned.
